Not a bad gust there at White Island, nearly 90 knots. More weatherwatch, NIWA and MS debate again in the news over forecasts and warnings

Pressure here dipped into the 989's briefly but currently back to 990.4 hPa. Up to 42mm locally now and might get a few more robust showers off the gulf until the low moves further SE.

I have seen white island record big nunbers before...I think a very upslope over reading occurs at the location in easterly winds
reports of strong easterly winds in the taupo area (40 kt gusts)
the most exposed parts of the Hauraki Gulf didnt even get to the 120km winds that were warned for land area

LOL, snaps from my security camera narrows down to 10 minutes when my purple cabbage tree got "pruned" by the wind this morning.

A land ob at Whangarei Heads on top of the gulf clocked 120 km/h. MS did there job well on the warning to exposed areas to easterlies.

I disagree
If only the most very exposed location just qualifies

Probably a downburst rather than a tornado, but damaging nonetheless.

Drizzly showers on and off in Akaroa today. Seems like the bulk of rain today in Canterbury has been spreading along the foothills from the northeast.
