heres the risk of thunder from the metservice for tommorow morning.

Valid to: Noon Wednesday 23 Oct 2019

Issued at: 10:47am Tuesday 22 Oct 2019

The low pressure system is expected to move over central New Zealand during Wednesday morning, bringing frequent heavy showers and a broad low risk of thunderstorms to the northern South Island and large areas of the North Island. However, the risk is considered moderate along the west coast of the North Island, from Kapiti to Taranaki early in the morning, and from Taranaki to Auckland covering the whole morning period. These showers or thunderstorms will be squally in nature, with strong winds gusts possible up to 110km/h, especially around the Auckland area late morning. High rainfall rates of 10-20 mm/hr and small hail are also likely.

For the east coast, a front is expected to move north during the morning bringing showers and strong winds. The atmosphere is slightly unstable ahead of this southwest change, and there is a moderate risk of thunderstorms along coastal parts with strong winds gusts around 100 km/h, heavy rain and small hail.

No other thunderstorms or significant convection expected over the remainder of the South Island.

risk reduces to low in the after noon but there is still risk of small hail.

yes. i heard about the fire. so hopefully the showers or thunderstorms that develope will put it out with heavy rain. just as long as lightning doesnt strike the particular building

Actually the fire service has mentioned the last thing this situation needs is rain.

Pea sized hail here as well. Temperature dropped to 10.2c during the shower. Wind is picking up.

its a gale but not a severe gale across the Auckland area currently...
it might pick up a bit more as the trough axis gets closer, but I am not seeing any major trend of increasing winds here
( we have had 57 knots here (105kmh))

A long way off a gale here. Some hail earlier, some of the showers today will be gusty no doubt.

I do see a bit of a increase in windspeed around the city
despite no change here
I suspect that is due to warming by the sun, i.e better mixing of the colder ground level wind with the upper level winds

NIWA just tweeted an incoming squall line due after 11am for AK, and a second line after noon

in their words "It is associated with a "vorticity maximum" or area of vigorous spin in the atmosphere"

the strongest winds were always going to be ahead of the wind change, like a bow wave pressure wind, i.e with the front /trough pushing north, it was compressing the isobars, which are then quickly relaxing behind it

Yes, wind seemed to peak here about 4.30pm, but at least it was sunny. Even made it to 15.7C which is a little higher than what I was expecting today.
