An approaching trough on the evening of 24 August saw rapid convection over Northern Waikato which developed a severe hailstorm over the Hauraki Plains near 9.30pm.
The overnight showers from the trough brought few thunderstorms from Northland to Taranaki.
Thursday started fine and sunny across most Northern Districts apart from Gisborne. Cold temperatures aloft combined very nicely with warming land, with Cbs developing in Northland and Southern inland Bay of Plenty in the morning. By early afternoon, Cu grew nicely to Cb with well-glaciated anvils in all Northern districts, thunderstorms grew nicely over the Kaimai-Mamuku ranges with lighting in most Cb's by 5pm. Localised hail and heavy rain, (up to 30mm/hr)
In the Hamilton sky I counted 6 Cb's at once, I was spoilt for choice!
Most Cb's fizzled out by 8pm
Fine for now, possible convective shower tomorrow.
In conclusion...
