Hmm… It would appear that of the over 100 previous sites with 'Past Weather' obs, about 1/3 now no longer exist? And of those remaining sites, about 1/3 now no longer include yesterday's hourly obs (i.e. only daily 'Last 30 Days' and yearly 'Historical Data')? ... :-k

Nice to see those temp obs are no longer rounded off to whole numbers though… :-)

So make sure you also change that accounts password, that's how they were getting in. They were changing the DNS Server settings to either 118.30.28.38/118.30.28.39, 171.244.3.110/171.244.3.111 or 1.53.252.215/1.53.252.164 The attacks were coming from IP addresses in both China and Russia in most cases. Attacks were random, sometimes only hours apart, sometimes days apart but longer term were an average of 32 hours apart. Don't know why I got targeted, but they were hitting me frequently. Suggest anyone with a NF15ACV Router supplied by Trustpower goes to the Admin/Password screen, changes the username to user and uses the default password of user to change it to something they won't break in to easily. Then check/alter if necessary the DNS settings on the LAN page to something you trust. I've set up all three to 1.1.1.1/1.0.0.1/8.8.8.8 and haven't had trouble since.

The attacks continue though...

I hate change. Didn't the old website work ok? The only good bit is all the radars have 120km scale. Everything is buried under too many menu layers.
I'm getting old.

I'm getting the hang of it. But I still think its ridiculous that they still have this area in the High Country, we are not high country, we dont get the high country weather, we should be in the Canterbury Plains section.

Rain Radar: following a storm with keen interest today but it seems to me that images for Canterbury/120km are taking twenty minutes to update?

Not just Canterbury either, but yeah, they're kinda obsolete by then... :-s
Even the 300km radar images are much faster on the old site.

I've gone back to the old MetService website and will use it until it finishes or closes down.
The old site is much better for downloading weather maps and printing for my weather dairy especially in severe weather events.
The new site maps wastes my ink which is much more expensive than the printer itself? :rolleyes:
Regarding today's weather event I found it better to follow on the radar.
I don't mind the new website. it's just a case of getting used to it.

Just a note on the radar issue. That was a bug that was resolved in an update last night - you should hopefully find the images updating with the same speed as the old site from now on.

good news too, the buttons getting in the way of the 120km rain radar is fixed on mobile :)

Could they put an access to the lightning strikes on the new Website and where they occur?
I think this is essential, especially regarding severe thunderstorm activity, which according to the media, is more common these days.

Watch this space in 2020!

One of the primary reasons for the website overhaul was to give us far more flexibility/capacity to add all sorts of new features, content and functionality to the site (including lightning data). We will progressively roll these out through 2020.

Had been meaning to comment on this as it is somewhat my field. I have a Trustpower supplied Netcom Router and unless the user has changed something it's not that trivial for an external attacker to get access, heck if it was that easy it would be bedlam - we would all be hacked within an hour of going online.
On my router the telnet interface is disabled even if accessed from the local LAN side. It also cannot be accessed from the outside as well. I believe it can be accessed externally via the WAN port, but only by the ISP, they need that access to help out users. But they firewall that off very carefully, other users on the same ISP or anyone else on the internet can't get access.

The router web interface on port 80 is also disabled from WAN, the only sane thing to do.

The only access open is the web interface from the internal (LAN) network, i.e. what you see if you type 192.168.1.1 in a browser when at home on the LAN network. So yes, you can change the default password if you wish, but if an attacker already has access to your LAN then you have much bigger problems already.

I've stuck a network recorder on the WAN side of my router and seen those port 23 attacks. I saw one every 2-3 minutes on average. Attackers are IP address and port scanning all the time looking for routers with open telnet or web interfaces and weak passwords. Hence every ISP supplied modem or router has both telnet and http port 80 access disabled by default from the WAN side, it would be complete carnage otherwise!

If your router has either telnet or web (port 80) access enabled from the WAN side, suggest you disable it immediately. Don't even rely on a good password as no need to be exposed in that way.

The Met Service website looks substandard and unprofessional because of the advertising stuck all over it.

Agreed, it's almost unusable on a phone now. I suggest they lack Beta testers & the coders don't actually try to use the site, it's that bad.

My Adblocker works overtime on my laptop and PC and it works fine. But sadly I haven't installed one on my phone so can barely use the site.

Was thinking similarly the other day. Not good that even on a phone with a large screen you still have to scroll down to find today's forecast.

I rather the old site. Actually the old site is still useful. even though it says "this site has been replace" i still use it. and they still update the thunderstorm,severe weather outlooks on there too.

Metservice still use Manakau City temperatures for Auckland Central, there can be 2 or 3C difference between the two places on a SW or NE flow. Manakau City is NOT Central Auckland.
