I observed a thundery downpour over the Howick area this afternoon. I was working over there and about 2pm noticed very large Cumulus building out to sea(just to the north). There was an overcast canopy of middle cloud so conditions where a bit grey for photography.

Image
Cuform buildup with rain curtain. Altostratus above.

Image
Cumulonimbus building into upper cloud. Thunder overhead at time of photo.

Image
Congestus spiraling upward. Shame the light was'nt better. Quite a spectacular buildup followed by about 20minutes of very heavy rain.

Weather this evening in AK is rain.

I am very disappointed in the detail in those photos. I should have set the exposure manually. I am still learning to use my camera.

Cool photos, I like the second one , looks heavy and dark on the bottom part of the cloud.

Just listned to Newstalk ZB's weather at 9pm and they said thunderstorms for canterbury (Chch) tonight again, but I agree with you John, doubt anything here in Chch tonight.

I need to invest in a new camera and video camera, my stuff is old and outdated, my video camera is playing up majorly. I have an idea on digital cameras now (thanks Steven), does anyone have an opinion on video cameras (max spend $3500) that the think would be good.

Cheers
Aaron Wilkinson

And yes John, I wounder to if Tony T got any hail in Amerberly, Tony?

Nothing here in Amberley, but several big Cbs over the Alps this morning with the anvils easily visible (they looked a long way away). From about 2pm onwards there was quite a build up to the west (probably over and west of Oxford in fact) which got pretty black and looked to be precipitating, but it never moved east. There was a lot of active Cu boiling up over the Plains here later in the afternoon, but it never seemed to come to much.

As an aside, it was very windy here last evening (Weds evening) from about 6pm through to about 3am with probably the strongest W-NW we have had for several months, and cold with it. Past experience suggests that TS are rather unlikely on the days following a good blow from the W/NW.

Also, thanks Tony. Interesting with the NW etc.

Cheers

Met Service lightning page(for last 5 days) shows a few lightning strikes
over Canterbury out to the NW of Christchurch. Also the lightning showing up around Auckland would have been from yesterdays instability.

http://www.metservice.com/lightning/exa ... strike.htm

Hope the weather clears a bit in AK today. Looks grey at the moment.

Wouldn't hold your breath for it the low centre is just east of us and it could easily move away to the SE and theres a bit of nimbus type cloud out there and a SW look

barometer dropping despite it being a SSW wind here..
satellite animation shows the low in the BOP is still deepening and moving towards east cape, where it will probably deepen even more ...
will mean some gale SW winds for the upper north island me thinks later today
(and there is a gale warning out)

Gee you Aucklanders must get sick of the sight of rain.

The weather cleared quickly this morning after only a trace of rain from the latest southerly.I had a great day skiing on Mt Hutt, fine light winds and very sunburnt.
Looking forward to some rain here next week from the southeastely system that us forecast, starting to forget what it looked like. :)

That would of been yesterday's Cbs to the NW of ChCh yesterday which produced the reported hail at Oxford. I recorded a couple of sferics.
Nothing much to get excited about, unfortunately.

Deano, I would enjoy the sun while you've got because its about to disappear for a week. Should be more snow on Mt Hutt with next weeks bitterly cold SE flow. Jim on TV1 reports 60cm at Turoa today. NI skiers will be delighted with that. Will be more overnight too.

Very wet, blustery night in AK. I quite like a stormy night with the sound of rain on the roof.

If you can get a frontal zone over Canterbury next week in that very cold onshore flow then there will be heavy snow falls inland.

The low centre can clearly be seen in the Radar imagery for 6pm this evening. It is out to the NE of Great Barrier Island.
