...but today is an extra day for February, that occurs once every four years, so should today's rain be included in the usual February's rain fall?
Anyway, 11.3mm was recorded here from early this morning, and I see, that nothing was recorded at the RPA at Levels and bugger all rain fell in Ashburton? :-k Interesting.

Yes looked like a good patch of rain near Geraldine on the rain radar this morning Ecan website showing 20mm at Woodbury. Nothing much here just 1mm in the gauge today from some brief drizzle this morning and 1.5mm yesterday from spillover rain.

I see that the Chatham Islands had thunder forecasted for them over the past few days. Whether they got them, or not I don't know.
Seems an unlikely place for thunderstorm activity but have they had thunderstorms in the past?
...anyway here in Geraldine, we got some good rain early this morning, reducing to drizzle/light rain with a total of 11.3mm falling today until around just after noon when cloud started to break, but then cloud cover becoming persistent for the rest of the day.
Today's maximum was 17,7C.
NE winds this afternoon, moderate to fresh at times but becoming calm this evening.

The Chatham Islands average more thunder-days per year than Christchurch…
THE CLIMATE AND WEATHER OF THE CHATHAM ISLANDS - NIWA

Thunderstorms

On average there are five days of thunder each year at the Chatham Islands, and 10 days of thunder in a year are likely once every 50 years. Although fairly evenly distributed throughout the year, there is a tendency for thunderstorms to occur more frequently from April to June and especially during the night. Meteorological situations associated with thunderstorms usually occur with cold unstable showery south-westerlies, or cold fronts crossing the islands. Due to the localised nature of thunderstorm occurrence, it is possible that not all thunderstorms are detected.

The heavy rain, lightning, hail, and wind squalls which can occur with thunderstorms will sometimes cause severe local flooding, disruption of electrical and electronic equipment, and damage vegetation and buildings.

I notice Auckland Airport had only 1 day with rain recorded this Feb, a record perhaps? Grey Lynn showing 3 days with rain but two of the days showing only 0.2mm.

Re Chathams thunder, I wouldn't trust any of the numbers from Niwa regarding thunderstorm days.

I think they would get cold pools passing through quite regularly in winter and spring with the 1 or 2 rumble type storms.

February 2020 was another very dry month for the top two-thirds of NZ, particularly in the North Island, with drought conditions declared in Northland and North Auckland on the 11th, followed by the Waikato and South Auckland on the 28th. Low rainfall records fell in places like Rotorua Aero (2.4mm) and Napier Aero (3.0mm). Record dry spells were also recorded in Auckland, along with places like Dargaville, Russell and Rotorua still not seeing any rain days over 1mm since about mid-Jan. In contrast, the lower South Island was very wet, with NIWA's Milford Sound EWS starting off with nearly 1100mm in just 3 days, including 566mm for the calendar day of the 3rd. A State of Emergency was declared in Southland and Fiordland after severe flooding and slips blocked roads and stranded tourists.

It was also a very warm month for most, starting off on the back of 'heatwaves' in the North Island's northern and eastern areas, the longest lasting 13 days at Whitianga and 12 days at Whangarei City. New all-time daily temp records were also set during the first few days of Feb at Napier Aero (37.4C), Whakatane Aero (36.4), Whangarei (34.1C), Whitianga (33.1C), Te Puke (33.0C), and Palmerston North (32.9C). Tauranga Aero also recorded its highest ever Feb mean T-max, Hamilton Aero its highest all-time mean T-max, Ruakura (Hamilton) its 3rd highest Feb mean T-max, Auckland Aero its 3rd equal highest mean T-max, Mangere (Auckland) its 4th equal highest mean T-max and Christchurch Aero its 4th highest Feb mean T-max.
