Thunderstorms North Island 30 March
High confidence of convection tomorrow so may as well kick off a spread.
Airmass moistens tomorrow with cold upper trough. Thunderstorms/hail first develop in western Bay of Plenty early tomorrow morning and then further development across the North Island in the afternoon due heating.
Obviously no driving around tomorrow as the police will likely pull you over.

Got to find something essential to do inland tomorrow (joke)
Maybe not just North Island, thinking of our rural Cantabs who may get some action

Boy that is an outlook you’d expect to see regularly in summer. Would have even been half a dozen outlooks like this in the past 100 days

Arg it's such a shame to happen at this time. At least we can find some good webcams.

Raining here now. Enough to wet the grass seed I sowed into patches of the lawn on Friday.

Thunderstorm out in the Bay at the moment, can hear it thundering away. Took me by surprise, wasn't expecting it.

Re: Thunderstorms North Island 30 March
Isolated storms overnight in the western BOP/Coromandel. Quite a bit of lightning with some of those storms yesterday evening.
I see dewpoint of 15C on some of the PWS in Coromandel this morning.

Re: Thunderstorms North Island 30 March
heres this mornings thunderstorm outlook for today.
Valid to: Midnight Monday 30 Mar 2020
Issued at: 8:25am Monday 30 Mar 2020
During the afternoon, winds will be light over much of the country allowing wind convergences to form producing cloud and showers. Combined with the cool temperatures in the upper atmosphere, there is a low risk of thunderstorms developing over much of the North Island and the west of the South Island.
In the east from Gisborne to Hawkes Bay, there is a moderate risk of thunderstorms during the period, bringing localised heavy rain with intensities of 15 to 25mm per hour and small hail, and a moderate risk of SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS, producing localised downpours of 25 to 40mm per hour.
About inland areas of Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Waitomo, Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of Plenty and also Taupo, Taihape and Taumarunui, there is a moderate risk of thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening, bringing localised heavy rain with intensities of 10 to 25mm per hour and small hail. In this area a few storms may be slow moving, with a low risk of SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS producing localised downpours of 25 to 40mm/hr.
There is also a moderate risk of thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening about inland areas of Buller and the Canterbury High Country north of the Mackenzie Basin. If these thunderstorms occur they may be accompanied by localised heavy rain with intensities of 10 to 25mm per hour. A less risk extends over the Mackenzie Basin.
No thunderstorms or severe convection expected over the remainder of New Zealand.

Re: Thunderstorms North Island 30 March
Atmosphere looks unstable over Auckland currently, just need some convergence to show up.
I think Waihi had its best chance late last night/early this morning with a front moving across the area from the east.

Re: Thunderstorms North Island 30 March
Glad it's not as bad as forecast so far. Had a fault to attend at Takaurunga. Very high based and rumbling but quite tame really.
