Cyclone Tracy wrote: Wed 08/07/2020 20:14 There is also mid level moisture expanding and moving directly north around 200km south of Christchurch at the moment. This will add some extra oomph into mix for the cold convection below in the SSW flow.
Might explain the abruptness of the cloud/shower movement late this afternoon, from a mid level average cloud to virga wintry precipitation look in 10 minutes.

Shower just passed with brief tiny Graupel, that distinct tinging noise on the roof.
850mb has warmed on the latest so might not be as low the levels now, however the 700mb is still solid.
Yes I am currently in Canterbury, will be here for now until I nail a conservation position.

Nothing here in Rolleston as yet. But dont really expect much with the wind flow. Perhaps the odd hail shower throughout the night but chch city much more in the firing line for small hail.

No snow over Evans Pass, but sleety hail in Lyttelton. Some very strong wind gusts on Dyers Road, Main Road towards Sumner earlier and just now on Sumner Road. 3C

Fine and cold here in Geraldine, apart from some scattered mid-range cloud and full moon waning to the east, walking home from the pub quiz at the Village Inn.

Good solid winter rain and hail cranking in here this evening. Reminds me of my childhood years in Miramar, Wellington

I'm surprised by the lack of wind with this system, yesterday was only light and atm no wind at all.
Warmer air is starting to move up over the South Island so that will push up the snow line during the day.

Wind is very strong at the coast but it really is pretty coastal. Snowing at Omihi apparently, but not a flake in Lyttelton. Some pretty heavy rain and hail though!

RE wind in auckland yesterday. there was gales in places. bins were knocked down in my street. plus reports of damage. still differant from april 2018 that storm had more widespread damage across Auckland. yesterdays only had isolated spots.

who said it was going to be like the april 2018 storm?
this was just a typical mill of the run westerly /SW gale setup for Auckland for winter which we get every year

Didn't even get past 50 km/h gusts here yesterday... the ferry trips to the city and back were also uneventful, water a bit choppy but nothing major.

only vaguely similar thing was it was a bit of a wave depression, but it didnt deepen as fast and was not pushing against a big high pressure either

yeah was expecting severe gales here too. but only got to 60km/h but bins fell down. the damage winds were isolated. but still was a ok st up. not a total bust. i did get lots of hail and a flash of lightning followed by thunder.

Looking at what little snow fall around here it looks about 300m.

Only ended up with 4.4mm from this system

Went up for a ride this morning in the Port Hills around Summit Road, took some pics around 350m-450m asl, a nice wee dusting in places so the Metservice looked pretty spot on in their forecast…

Nice pics bradley! Snow chase on the bike? 👍 metservice have definitely gotten alot better with forecasts. I follow metservice, weatherwatch and blue skies. Speaking of blue skies, i like the weekly vids from TonyT on facebook.
