Funnel cloud pic

Unread post by Thunder »

This photo is of two funnel clouds near Ngauruwahia (don't have a clue where it is, North Island somewhere?), Pete Mcghee sent it to me a while back and I thought I'd put it up here. It was during 1990 most likely during the summer period.

Pete's father took the photo and due to it being an automatic camera, quality isn't very good. Here is what Pete said to me:

Ngauruwahia: 2 funnels in one shot ! My father was hitchhiking when he saw
the FC, passing car stopped to offer lift and conversation went something
like:
"Where are you going?"
"Anywhere, as long as it's away from that thing" [pointing]
"Bl^%^y H&ll ! Get in!"

Car travelled about 5km further up road before they stopped and looked back
and took the photos :)

Also, John, did you recieve an email from me? If not I'll send it off again.

Cheers
Aaron Wilkinson

Is'nt funny how the powerlines are always in the way when there is an interesting cloud to photo. Great picture.

I once observed about 12 funnel occurances off one cloud over a period of about an hour over East Tamiki. In those days my camera was something that was stowed away, unlike now.

Hey AAron, that design is marvellous. Is that was what you you trying to send on that email?
When you come over here on Friday for the NZTS semi-AGM type of meeting, maybe you might be able to help me download such images, as I was so frustrated to do so yesterday.
Any other ideas????

I think the logo looks very good Aaron. Best to keep it simple though and remove the big lightning bolt back ground. Also, If you can avoid 'more than just thunder' on your logo, do so. But the makings of an excellent logo their, well done. I think branding the NZTS is the way to go.
How far off is the web site John?

The design I was trying to send to you John was just the oval part with New Zealand Thunderstorm Scoiety in it. Glad you like what I've done. ;)

Steven, did you know you play a part in this logo?, that ligthning bolt going down the back is one of your photos off your thunderstorm.co.nz site, I just rubbed everything out and left the lightning pratically, can you see it?
Steven your right, keep it simple, you and John, what do you think of just this (just imagine the "more than just thunder" line isn't there?) I put it there because it's on the current shirt as you would know John.
As for the website, remember me going on and on about how I was going to do one on the old forum, I'm just a big hypicrite. I still want to do one and as you can see from my current website http://www.escootersnz.com I can do them, Just a matter of time, I really hope I get one done.

Cheers

Severe Weather Watch

SEVERE WEATHER WATCH FOR GISBORNE HAWKES BAY MARLBOROUGH CANTERBURY OTAGO
ISSUED BY METSERVICE AT 2012hrs 08-Sep-2003

HEAVY RAIN LESS LIKELY IN GISBORNE AND HAWKES BAY NOW BUT STILL ON THE CARDS FOR
THE EAST COAST OF THE SOUTH ISLAND.

A deepening low passing north of the country, and a building high to the south,
are supporting a strengthening southeast flow over the country. There are two
areas where the main rainfalls are expected.

In Gisborne and northern Hawkes Bay:
Our latest guidance now suggests that heavy rainfall is not so likely to turn up
in northern Hawkes Bay on Tuesday, but is still possible in Gisborne. The main
period of rainfall is from about early Tuesday afternoon through to the early
morning hours of Wednesday. Rainfall amounts are now less likely to meet
warning criteria in Gisborne, however this watch will be maintained for both
areas.

In eastern Otago and Canterbury:
Rain is expected to set in Tuesday morning and remain persistent through to
about midday Wednesday. Further rain is likely after that, but at lighter
intensities. Snow is likely down to about 800 metres in Canterbury and 600
metres in Otago.

In the Kaikoura Ranges:
The rain is expected to set in on the Kaikoura Coast Tuesday afternoon and last
through to late Wednesday afternoon. This area looks like the location with the
highest likelihood of meeting warning criteria, with perhaps 100mm falling in
about a 24 hour period. Snow is expected to lower to about 800 to 900 metres.

Farmers and motorists in particular, are urged to stay up to date with the
latest forecasts in case parts of this watch are upgraded to warnings.

This Watch will be reviewed by 9am Tuesday September 9, 2003

NZ Thunderstorm Society

Sorry I am having problems with my quotes:
I mean[quote]How far off is the web site John?

Good question Steven.
I am planning to have a AGM type of thing for the NZ Thunderstorm Soc this Friday at 3pm here at my place where we will consider future options for the NZTS with consideration to a wed site, T-shirt design and possible NZTS calender.
The coming thunderstorm potential for Canterbury this thunderstorm season of course, will also be on the agenda and what consequences the NZTS should take if it fails, which I think it may do!!!

The "More than just thunder" phrase came from NZ Towel Supply who use my symbol NZTS and they did have a phrase, 'morethan just towels' of where I got my 'more than just thunder' from
I'm quite happy to drop that, but the T must have that met=map T symbol
