US Weather 2021

Unread post by tgsnoopy »

So first reports of tornadoes I've noticed today, near Abernathy TX. Tomorrow looks better & being a Saturday hopefully might be worth armchair chasing.

UD helicity swaths for today over the southern plains. Some long track supercells/possible tornadoes suggested for Texas Panhandle.

It's weird, chasers up in Colorado in the snow.... Not that far away the gathering is forming in the Texas Panhandle.

Have seen reports of dense fog, only around 100m visibility. Lets hope everyone is sensible and gets to their destinations ok.

Big day in the Texas panhandle. Some decent long track tornadoes. That line of supercells was epic for this early in the season!

The early season set-ups in the Texas Panhandle seem to perform well for tornadoes.

The forecast soundings today looked more like Dixie Alley soundings with very little capping.

Looks like a big day for Dixie Alley on Wednesday (Thursday NZ). SPC has a 30% chance on the extended outlook for day 4.

A NZ style thunderstorm set up over northern Kansas yesterday. 500mb temperature -26C.

SPC had a marginal risk with 2% tornado for landspouts.

SPC have their first High Risk for the 2021 tornado season posted in Dixie Alley tomorrow.

I have only looked at gfs, and forecast soundings certainly point to the possibility of a few long track violent tornadoes. A sample sounding for western Alabama tomorrow. CAPE 1200 with very strong shear.

It's been a very active day over there, threat continuing in to the evening....

Aerial video of a tornado near Silas, Alabama just a few minutes ago. It crossed the road taking out trees. About to look for damage. Was very powerful looking at times. Video includes multiple power flashes and a horizontal tube wrapping around the tornado.

GFS showing a major set up for Dixie Alley in a couple of days time. EHI values of 6.

Are these big early season set ups indicating a major tornado season ahead for the plains states?

Daniel Shaw will be arriving in the US approx 10th April. I'm looking forward to watching his live streaming. Going to the US at the moment is a massive undertaking for him, the QANTAS fares alone being Au$12,400!

With the kind of expenses he's facing this year I'd encourage any chasers who aren't going to support him via Patreon to be able to observe his live feeds. http://www.severestorms.com.au

Going from NZ is now possible, access in to the US is now open from NZ, however you need special permission from NZ Government to leave (apparently to prebook & I'm told prepay your quarantine for your return). You are required to have been vaccinated and are also liable for the cost of a Covid-19 test here (which must be negative) with 48 hours of your departure, another on arrival in the US and then another in the US before leaving.

Big thing of course is travel insurance in case of medical emergency/accident in the US. These won't be cheap & will be garanteed to exclude COVID-19/SARS2 (as it is a epidemic/pandemic which have always been excluded).

And the consequences of turning back into hail. Disclaimer, the vehicle was already beaten by hail, it wasn't all from the latest encounter.

So Reed Timmer has just received back his Go Pro lost last year in the prior hail event that beat up his Subaru, Will hopefully soon see a timelapse from that camera. But here is the video, action starts at about 4 minutes...

Maybe a Darwin or SE Queensland chase later in the year this year? I'm hoping for the US next year, once the vaccinations have taken place we should be able to open up to those who have been vaccinated.

I wont be going to Aussie this year (this year was off regardless for the states) as we are about to start building a house. Next year a Darwin trip is a real possibility if the USA is still closed.

Yea I could probably target Darwin on a flexible date period in the summer. Just go when it’s looking good. Spend best part of a week there.
