Didn't happen this afternoon, just got cloudy and rained a little. Back in town now with that weak rain band approaching.

MetService April 2021 Summary - A very warm month

April got off to a very warm start as humid northwest winds whipped temperatures up for Easter weekend. Timaru Airport recorded its warmest ever April day with 30.6 Celsius on Easter Sunday whilst much of the country enjoyed a fine and warm long weekend. The warmth stuck around into mid-month, just not to the same degree. This warmth didn’t necessarily drive fine weather though, as frequent lows in the Tasman Sea brought northwesterly winds, high humidity, and frequent thunderstorms. In the final week of April, we saw these lows sink into the Southern Ocean, allowing another high pressure to move into the Tasman Sea. The result of this shift in pattern was for a spell of cool southwest winds and weak fronts moving up the country. The final few days of the month were increasingly fine and settled, sat beneath a large area of high pressure.

All of this balanced out to bring a much warmer than average month nationwide, a slightly wetter and duller than average month along the west coasts, and a much drier and sunnier than average month in the east. Soils remain much drier than normal across eastern parts of both islands as well as western Bay of Plenty and Auckland.
