Abit foggy here this morning rather cool too with that SW blowing.
Nice CB in the Tasman just off SE Australia auckland tracker picking up strikes from further out at sea that way could be from the CB quite big though another weaker one closer satelitte below.
Cheers

I note the Chch airport reporting cumulonimbus clouds, where!? I can't see a thing with all this low cloud about! Looks like a strike has occured just off the West Coast (around 15 minuted ago), could it possibly be the aeroplanes reporting the clouds?
Yes Steven, should be some showers tomorrow in the Waikato then moving up to Auckland later on with a few heavy showers at times within that trough system extending out into the Tasman. Will it turn thundery? Hope so!!
Cheers.

Aaron, I think you are misreading the comment at the end of the metar, VCBR which means mist in the vicinity (BR is the code for mist, from the french for fog, and VC being the prefix meaning in the vicinity, as in VCSH for nearby showers etc). There should be plenty of internet pages with the Metar codes on them if you need to brush up
And, the rules are quite strict, the metar can only report what the observer can see or measure, so if planes could see CBs then that doesnt qualify them to be reported in the metar.

I didn't actually read the metar, it was just the NOAA website. Perhaps the computer they are running is missinturpreting (sp?) the METAR. This is what it said:
Wind from the E (080 degrees) at 6 MPH (5 KT) (direction variable)
Sky conditions mostly cloudy
Weather Cumulonimbus clouds observed
Temperature 53 F (12 C)
Dew Point 48 F (9 C)
Relative Humidity 81%
Pressure (altimeter) 29.83 in. Hg (1010 hPa)
ob NZCH 270400Z 08005KT 020V150 15KM SCT014 BKN180 12/09 Q1010 TEMPO FM0500 3000 -DZ BKN008 RMK VCBR
Cumulonimbus clouds observed! Perhaps it's wrong then? Oh well. You might be able to see it if the link is still up. It's here: http://weather.noaa.gov/weather/current/NZCH.html
It does say BR as you note in the METAR, oh well. I'm not sure? Thanks.
Cheers

The wind was quite gusty early on, up to 55km/h around 6:30am. I got to work before the shower came through. Temperature dropping now 6.4C and calm.tich wrote:The southerly was a bit stronger than expected out on Banks Peninsula; we had some hail, plus a slight dusting of snow on the tops of some hills. Chch (Hillmorton) must've got a shorter period of precipitation, with 1.8mm this morning, most of it in 1 hour.
