Wow that is off the charts beyond even the MetService high limit in the warning! Considering we've still got so much to go, this has all the potential to be a really dangerous and significant event.

Is that Rain Gauge in the Township or up in the Mountain? If its in the Township then that's a truly Remarkable amount and totals could even be higher Further back,That area is magnet for heavy Easterly rain.

Agreed, but at least this was expected. Could be an awful lot worse if caught unprepared.

has peaked now , Mount Somers, the intensity, which peaked at 24mm an hour
which is not actually high compared to one off rain events (e.g tropical type thunderstorm down pours)
but its the duration of that heavy rain which is the key (i.e this is like a west coast of the south island rain event ! )

That’s staggering at Somers, even for the mountain.

Re: Large Rain Event Canterbury and high altitude snow. 29-31st May 2021
We have had very heavy rain here in the last 20 minutes thanks to what looks like a squall line heading directly east to west hitting the Southern half of Christchurch. 5mm in last 15 minutes.

Re: Large Rain Event Canterbury and high altitude snow. 29-31st May 2021
The pivot point between the NE flow and the SE flow is starting to establish itself around Christchurch. Kinda like half time in the game. Pretty intense first half saw a lot of action. Will the second half live up to the pre-match speculation?

Re: Large Rain Event Canterbury and high altitude snow. 29-31st May 2021
Easily the heaviest rain of this system over the last couple of hours. Feeding in directly from the east. Lots of surface flooding around the HoonHay/Halswell area with a couple of roads shut and water right over some other roads. Heathcote river very high again now, will be interesting at high tide tonight. Approaching 50mm for the day here now and 68mm for the event locally. Christchurch Airport now at 76mm for the event.

In your opinion could there be as much rain the 2nd half as the 1st half Tony?

Re: Large Rain Event Canterbury and high altitude snow. 29-31st May 2021
For Christchurch yes. For North Canterbury maybe. For areas south of Christchurch probably not, as the airflow direction will not enable such perfect orographic enhancement. But then with this much water on the ground and in the rivers it doesn't take as much rain to create as much havoc...

Re: Large Rain Event Canterbury and high altitude snow. 29-31st May 2021
Got out for a wander around the village, a couple of squally downpours but the rain gear did its job. Benefits of living on a hill, all draining well though there was a little soil getting washed down the gutter on Jacksons Road. No flooding lower down but didn't check the tunnel roundabout which can flood a little.

Re: Large Rain Event Canterbury and high altitude snow. 29-31st May 2021
We have been told to prepare to evacuate in Netherby and Allenton. I’ve heard from the mayor that the stop banks at the state highway one bridge will hold close to 2000 cumecs. The main concern is the stop banks at the top of Allenton as they’re just about to be breached.

We are all going to remember this event for a long time. Crazy numbers and potentially just half way through for some.

I'm at a loss to understand where the wind is, mostly calm here all day. Don't know if thars a good thing or not!
