Another Heavy Rain event - Eastern South Island 20-21st June
Thought I might as well start a thread for this, as MS have issued warnings and watches. 230-280mm for the Kaikoura Coast and Ranges with a watch extending as far south as Amberley. My gut tells me it might even go further south than that.
Anyway, 250mm+ around Kaikoura in less than 24 hours could create some infrastructure problems, so one to watch for sure!

Whats up with CWU calling Advection snow to 400m? Is anyone seeing this at all? Seems unlikely

Metservice modelling is so far wrong it's not even funny. Predicting 0mm of rain in CHCH between now and 6pm, yet look at this heavy and very slow moving band incoming.

In fairness we know they are garbage and the rain maps show a decent fall before 3pm.
Looking further north, the Metservice maps also lessen the intensity for Kaikõura through the night although it's still a sustained period of heavy rain. Just may help with any flood peaks.

I always thought the rainfall modelling was directly related to the 3day maps?Chris W wrote: ↑Sun 20/06/2021 13:23 In fairness we know they are garbage and the rain maps show a decent fall before 3pm.

Been persistent rain in waikawa bay Picton for 2 days now, creeks all up and SE wind really starting to blow now. Makes a change living up here with much more dynamic weather than Rangiora

Yes it does match up with that Josh, it didn't appear to do that today for some reason. Anyways, a good band of rain about to move in here again in Christchurch. 10mm for far today from periods of rain, with drizzle patches in between. Not expecting too much after dark apart from scattered rain or drizzle, so I am guessing what we get in the next 2 or 3 hours will be the bulk of it for the City. The rest largely to the north, especially the Kaikoura Coast.snowchaser01 wrote: ↑Sun 20/06/2021 13:24I always thought the rainfall modelling was directly related to the 3day maps?Chris W wrote: ↑Sun 20/06/2021 13:23 In fairness we know they are garbage and the rain maps show a decent fall before 3pm.

Hi Leighton, yea that band has been hanging offshore for a while, now finally coming ashore! Up to 12mm for the day now. This band should add another 15-20mm and as you say, scatter falls for the city after dark with some banking inland.Cantab03 wrote: ↑Sun 20/06/2021 15:23Yes it does match up with that Josh, it didn't appear to do that today for some reason. A total of 6mm for us, just enough to be annoying for outdoors pursuitssnowchaser01 wrote: ↑Sun 20/06/2021 15:27

Seems like this event was mainly a eastern NI event rather than down here.
Lots of rain around the Gisborne area and wind gusts up to 160k/hr reported in Cook Strait today.
