Re: End of June cold shot.
Seems some serious changes have occurred in the last runs tonight of GFS and EC. Both appear to now favour a wedging high pressure system. This is allowing an enormous feed of cold showery air and has put the system as more of a Straight Southerly. This was not expected. Its no wonder Metservice have jumped onto the MS Snow Watch for Canterbury. Plains could see 5-10cm tomorrow now.

Ooooooh maybe, just maybe, there’s a chance of a flurry for us in Ashburton.

Re: End of June cold shot.
Even more likely to get snow out here in Akaroa. Whether it settles in the town is another matter.

Re: End of June cold shot.
Ha yea well I was out for a run tonight up the Port Hills, Worsleys and along the tops to Kiwi and looping back down through cashmere. Light snow was falling at the top of Worsley Bodybag, good invigorating wind. The road crews were working hard on the improvements at Dyers Pass, earning their paymikestormchaser wrote: ↑Mon 28/06/2021 19:49
Razor you will be in a perfect spot up near cracroft cashmere. You may see a good 5cm down to 200m
BTW we are based in Halswell these days, only 5km from where we used to be

Thanks goodness for the Otago radar at Hindon,
Shows the flows and operation of showers in this cold SW flow.
Much better in previous events with the only the Southland radar showing shower movements.

Not yet. I’m overnighting in the city. Been awake since 11.15pm. I’m watching the MetService rain radar, friends from Dunedin have posted photos of their snow covered properties an hour ago. No snow falling yet in the inner city. Will update again just after 6am.

From the radar it doesn't look like much is going to happen until about 3am?

Re: End of June cold shot.
A snow shower just came through and woke me up. It's settled in Mosgiel, and everything is white. I don't think it's very thick outside, but from what was hitting the window it sounds very heavy and wet. We'll see what happens in the morning.

Currently: 2.8°C, no sign of any precipitation overnight; some light clouds overhead going north fairly fast, sky otherwise clear; good view of Moon and Jupiter to the west. Very cold breeze.

Heavy hail and sleet in Akaroa, with a couple of loud claps of thunder and flashes about an hour ago.

Re: End of June cold shot.
A hail shower came through just before 7 am and added to the snow that was there. My sisters at sea level at other parts of Dunedin don't have any snow or hail at all. Sounds like a bit hit and miss.

Re: End of June cold shot.
I think Tony had it right a few days ago when he said that in regards to the snow people in the higher elevations of the port hills will get something to be excited about but the rest of us on the plains will be wondering what all the fuss is about lol

Re: End of June cold shot.
There's snow on Mt Cass north of Amberley, and a friend just turned around at Greta Valley heading north due to heavy snow. Bet it's snowing at home now, 95m asl there so if St Martins is getting it then you know!
