power cuts in a our district for some locals...not good with it being cold (7C)

A fine cold day here in Geraldine today with the polar blast weather moving northwards out to sea.
Not much snow around here on the foothills or any precipitation..
Cold SW wind through Stafford Street in Timaru but not much wind in Geraldine.
Today's maximum was 9.3C.
Should be a few good frosts for the next couple of nights in exposed areas.

Down to 0.9C here - the coldest morning in the last 3 years (nothing close to a record though). Interested to see if tonight can get lower, with this anticyclone moving in.

Not as cold overnight as I was expecting as a result of the polar blast.
A fine sunny day except for some cloud around noon with a light SE to end off the first half of 2021.
Warm in the sun with today's maximum of 15.3C in the sunshine around noon.

June 2021 looks likely to at least equal NZ's warmest June on record. It was, however, generally fairly cloudy, with above normal sunshine limited to the West Coast and Southland, central parts of the North Island, Auckland and south Northland. Rainfall was also a bit of a mixed bag around country.
MetService June 2021 Summary - Warm and wet with an icy blast to finish

Writing this with one eye on the recently depleted log pile it seems odd to say that last month has been exceptionally warm. A blast of Antarctic air bringing snow to low levels as far north as the Wairarapa, frosty mornings almost everywhere, and huge swells battering the south and east coasts sticks in the mind at the expense of the previous 25 days of unseasonal warmth. Thanks to a rinse and repeat regime of Tasman lows most of the country saw June temperatures run well above average. The West Coast of South Island, Canterbury High Country, Marlborough, and almost all North Island east of a line from Hamilton to Whanganui all running over 2 Celsius warmer than average for the time of year with June records broken in Wellington and Westport.

High pressure was never too far away with periods of settled weather punctuated by short sharp, high impact events driven by Tasman lows. One of these brought 177mm of rain to Kaikohe in 24 hours on the 7th, and another spawned a damaging tornado for Auckland on the 19th. It was in the wake of such a low that the polar blast brought our first real taste of winter this year.
