General March Weather
Looks like an anticyclonic start for March feeding the wet weather into Queensland.
Hope the settled weather is around on the 3rd/4th as we plan to visit Kapiti Island for an overnight stay.

Re: General March Weather
Some beefy showers passing along the hills west of here. St Arnaud is looking the place to be today.
Photo of a neat looking cloud to my ENE, quite a high base to,
I reckon 3000m.

Re: General March Weather
Incredible sudden downpour here, popped up in minutes from absolutely nothing on a warm, sunny and dry day. At first I thought it was only a brief sun shower but now has flooded the lawn and still going strong.

Re: General March Weather
It was incredibly localised, closest PWS got 7mm but I estimate got 10mm or more at home.cbm wrote:Incredible sudden downpour here, popped up in minutes from absolutely nothing on a warm, sunny and dry day. Re: General March Weather
Did anyone capture yesterdays thunderstorm outlook? Reports of a possible tornado overnight in Papamoa, Metservice don't see evidence of tornado on radar, but it did retain an impressive structure over a 6+ hour period

Wow, didn't notice a thing. Certainly wasn't a forecast risk I was aware of.

Re: General March Weather
The set up next week of a blocked trough over Southland is similar to situations which have lead to flooding in the region in the past. Southland regional council need to keep a close eye on this. Accumulations of 80mm+ currently progged.

Re: General March Weather
yeah, the remains do look to combine forces with the remains from the east coast australia rain trough to form a new Tasman Low

Back in Lower Hutt after a wonderful trip to Kapiti Island.
Here is a photo I took of some K/H cloud looking west from Eastbourne this afternoon.

If was not for that one rain on 7th Feb it would be terrible now. Even with it, it sure is drying out again.David wrote:Just 7mm in the last 27 days. Outlook remains dry for now

Re: General March Weather
The familiar pattern of frontal activity dying as it approaches northern NZ, our Summer ridge is still in control. Looking ahead there is upper level cooling early next week but moisture/convergence is not there, ingredients for precipitation have struggled to come together this Summer here.

Re: General March Weather
An interesting tweet from your NIWA organisation concerning SST's off New Zealand and that this summer they have been the second highest (overall) for the last 40 years. Anyone notice this when they went for a swim?

Re: General March Weather
Certainly have. Last time I was at Tongaporutu in Taranaki (weekend of Cyclone Dovi) I took a pool thermometer with me out of interest and the water temp was a whisker under 23C. Even once the big swells arrived with Dovi the water temp hardly seemed to change, despite the mixing that would have been going on, so it seemed to be more then just a warm surface layer. That and the crazy warm overnight temps (mid 20s) with Dovi approaching made for a really ominous feel. So much energy involved, it's amazing. And a bit of a worry.Simon Culling wrote: ↑Mon 07/03/2022 23:18 An interesting tweet from your NIWA organisation concerning SST's off New Zealand and that this summer they have been the second highest (overall) for the last 40 years. Yes, had a swim at Goose Bay a month ago, the water there is normally cold because its close to the Kaikoura Trench, it was warmer than I thought it was going to be.

Re: General March Weather
Don't think so. Boring weather and clagg continuing here under this La Nina weather.
Not a very interesting summer and autumn doesn't look all that good either.

Re: General March Weather
Yes very very warm swimming on the west coast this year all summer long. Usually west cost is colder than east coast. I felt it was the opposite this year.Simon Culling wrote:An interesting tweet from your NIWA organisation concerning SST's off New Zealand and that this summer they have been the second highest (overall) for the last 40 years. Re: General March Weather
The warmer seas is probably why we get so much clagg in anticyclonic conditions after a cold front moves in from the south on the east coast of Te Waipounamu.
