Hey Tony, what do you think the weather will be doing in Blenheim the weekend of the 30th May?

It's like when people ask me "How long is this rain going to last?"
I say that it's going to rain until it stops.

Re: General April Weather
Overcast grey cloud conditions today with some rain overnight becoming drizzly for much of the day but easing off this afternoon.
8.7mm for today. Rather cool confections today with the daytime maximum only reaching 11.6C.

Re: General April Weather
Sorry, that's a fault of the spell-checker. I didn't see that, I meant conditions.
...anyway a nice fine day with light SE here and a bit of scattered cloud this afternoon.
Just had 2 RNZAF Hercules aircraft flyng over a a very low level. Place stinks of aviation fuel

Re: General April Weather
The very low flightover of the Hercules aircraft this afternoon gave a fright to many locals which resulted in a smell of aviation fuel over the area but it cleared away when then SE freshened not long after. I thought it was inconsiderate of the RNZAF doing that as there are lots of resthomes in the area when are a lot of elderly people and with the Russia/Ukraine war is featured alot on the media.
...anyway a fine morning and early afternoon but it clouded over when the SE freshened and then cleared with it with a NE wind but clouded over this evening with some drizzle.
Today's maximum was 17,2C.

Re: General April Weather
Grey Lynn up to 26C today.
Could do with some rain here, it looks like later Tuesday/ Wednesday morning for showers or rain here, perhaps some heavy showers.

General April Weather
I got 28.1 yesterday which is a record for April for me. Beating the previous 26.0. Quite remarkable. And today was 27.1.

Re: General March Weather
Out at the coast today, it was as good as any summer's day, water was 21C and beaches were packed. Even when a bit of onshore breeze came in after 1pm it didn't seem to drop the temperature noticeably at all.

Re: General April Weather
Geez, nothing like that around here. Never went for a swim at the local baths this year compared to other years that we have been in Geraldine.
Now the swimming pools are closed, lots of people lightning fires. You see people in t shirts and shorts when it's 'freezing' outside?
...anyway today was a nice sunny day this morning after the drizzly cloud cleared away until the clagg moved in with some drizzle this evening.
Max was 18C before the low cloud moved in. 0.9mm of drizzle for today.

Re: General April Weather
On Saturday afternoon (2 April) several small funnel clouds formed out to sea north of New Plymouth. The day was fine and humid. Clouds were billowing up out to sea (first photo) and while they were dark underneath there appeared to be no rain of any magnitude and no lightning and thunder.
I saw the first at about 12.45 while driving from Oakura to New Plymouth. I did stop but had lost it by then and so didn't get any photos. I got home and told my wife I'm sure I saw a funnel cloud while driving home.
Around 1.25 I looked out to sea and saw a distinct funnel (second photo). A few minutes later a second smaller funnel formed just to the east (or right) of it. Sorry, it is quite hard to see (third photo). These two faded away after a few minutes.
Then about ten minutes later something much larger formed though it was never as distinctly funnel shaped (fourth photo). At the same time another smaller but more distinct funnel had formed in front of the larger one. It can be seen in both the fourth and fifth photos.
These two gradually drifted to the east and then faded away.
I don't think any of them touched down - there were no reports on any damage - in fact no reports on the funnel clouds at all.
I suspect there were some other funnels in the same event but they were very small, even through binoculars. I definitely saw five - four small but one that appeared as though it could develop into something significant - but didn't.
This is the second time I've seen multiple funnel clouds form out to sea north of New Plymouth. Back in February 2011 there was a similar slow moving cloud out to sea from which around 12 separate funnels formed over about a three hour period. A couple of those ones did touch down and form waterspouts.
Both these events were quite different to the frontal weather where we get occasional waterspouts and tornadoes in Taranaki. I've seen at least four of those as well.
