Re: General May Weather
Jeffs station in Hoon hay just posted his April summary. 2nd warmest April recorded with a mean Temp of 13.3c only 16.2mm of rainfall.
Sure has been a very warm start to Autumn.

Starting to notice some cloud building up inland from here. Not a lot of heating today though

Re: General May Weather
Any thunder as forecasted by MS ? Boring down here. Noticed that MS have updated their rain radar website with jittery images ???
Looks awful compared to the original site or is it they have been infected by a virus or something?

3.8mm from a frontal system in May. Pathetic.

At least you got a bit of thunder. Mind you it never really looked that promising here yesterday

Re: General May Weather
Missing the heating now.
The thunder here this morning was the start of the cold season Tstorm season which is having a very weak start this year.

Re: General May Weather
Only slightly better here 7 to 8mm.
Anyone have ideas on why these Southern Ocean fronts are (still) so weak, are the warm seas down past Fiordland reducing the temperature differential?

Re: General May Weather
The MJO has spent very little time in the westerly enhancing phases over the last 6 months, and on the relatively few occasions it has been active its been in the anti-westerly phases. This is to be expected with an active La Nina event, but the impact on our weather patterns is to mostly weaken low pressure systems arriving from the west, and mostly enhance systems arriving from the north and east.

Re: General May Weather
Thanks for that. You think this may change by the last week in May however?

Re: General May Weather
Broadly, no. But there are signs of some temporary MJO activity in the phases which encourage troughing in this part of the world at the end of the month, so the chances of more active rain producing systems is higher then. Fingers crossed eh?

Re: General May Weather
Everything crossed. I see the Ruakura site got an isolated relative downpour of 16.8mm yesterday. That will make the official figures look not as bad.
This past weekend, I did a club run cross country run on a farm that is very near where members of my immediate family farm, it was almost surreal that it was May given how dry and dusty the farm was, and how hot the sun was. Also drove over to Waihi area next day, some of the farmland between Morrinsville and Paeroa especially looks terrible, as bad as any Jan or Feb drought I have seen.

Re: General May Weather
Rainfall amounts ranged around 16-17 mm from Cheviot southward down coastal areas, whats interesting is its not very often inland will get much higher amounts from this type of system - 30mm at Waiau and 37mm here. Anyone know of other totals north of CHCH.

Re: General May Weather
My bore is starting to run dry each afternoon. Have never had this happen to this bore before. It’s effectively rained two or 3 times this year so far.
Is there rain at the end of the month? If not it’s going to be a horrifically costly drought this one.

I've. Never heard of any Metservice or even Ecan site in Geraldine, there is Ecan sites at Woodbury and Geraldine Forest but both those are at least 10km away from Geraldine township.NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote: ↑Tue 10/05/2022 16:14 I don't know where the Geraldine site is, only got 7.5mm here all up.
18mm here for this event, most of that falling in a breif but intense downpour yesterday evening.

I know that there is a rain gauge at the Orari Estate on State highway 1 between the rail and road bridges.snowstormwatcher wrote: ↑Tue 10/05/2022 20:24I've. 30m Richard. It’s likely a buildup of about 4 years of low rainfall.Richard wrote:How deep is your bore Jamiejamie wrote: ↑Tue 10/05/2022 20:01 My bore is starting to run dry each afternoon. Have never had this happen to this bore before. It’s effectively rained two or 3 times this year so far.
