Re: General May Weather
Missed all the foul weather that plagued the western regions areas of NZ but cold looking wintry layers of cloud moving north to the west.
However a cloudy day here with cold SW winds easing this evening and dying out.
Cold day with today's maximum of 12C reached around 1am this morning. Daytime temperature was around 10C.

Re: General May Weather
Another cold upper system on way for south island late tomorrow afternoon. Bringing another chance for thunderstorms and hail. Actually thought tomorrow looked the best chance out of all the SW changes coming up. Might be the last chance before winter sets in

Re: General May Weather
We had planned to go to the pictures tomorrow afternoon here in Geraldine at that lovely old picture theatre or cinema as some people call them, but if anything looks likely we might have to go on another day.

Nothing would be worse hey, being waterboarded would be less of a torture than sitting in a movie cinema knowing a storm could be closing inNZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote: ↑Sat 21/05/2022 18:29 We had planned to go to the pictures tomorrow afternoon here in Geraldine at that lovely old picture theatre or cinema as some people call them, but if anything looks likely we might have to go on another day.

Re: General May Weather
Year to date rainfall is now at the second lowest I've recorded it out of all years my station has been recording, at 209mm. Only exceeding 2020 which was on 152mm at this point in the year (shown in purple). Black line is the mean

I think what could be lacking if anything would be the surface moisture. But everything else looks favorable.NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote: ↑Sat 21/05/2022 18:29 We had planned to go to the pictures tomorrow afternoon here in Geraldine at that lovely old picture theatre or cinema as some people call them, but if anything looks likely we might have to go on another day.
I think MetServices outlook of moderate I'd agree with

Re: General May Weather
I see tasman sea lows to follow after this high pressure
so maybe June will end up being warm and wet for western North Island
we need it

Re: General May Weather
Yeah few storms have popped up inland tonight. Gfs plotted more moisture up that way. Looked promising further south but got to late in day. And at this time of year it really is difficult to pin point

Re: General May Weather
Sad day here today with no thunderstorms or interesting weather as what was forecasted even though a few lightning strikes were recorded around the Oxford area. I blame climate change with storm potential becoming less and less around here.? Never looked like it, here, mind you it is May.
Today's maximum was 15.7C.

Re: General May Weather
At this stage next week is looking much better for rain chances here with upper level cooling over moist air, something to watch.

Re: General May Weather
nice to see that the tasman sea is starting to produce lows and the highs are no longer blocking

Re: General May Weather
Looking like a period of active westerly pattern coming up for NZ from next week, some thundery weather for western NZ. Still a long way out but that is how it looks currently

Re: General May Weather
Has anyone noticed the strange morning and evening twilight skies in the last few weeks? Very bright with a faint wispy texture at what looks like a very high altitude. Last time I saw anything like this was after the Australian bush fires. The photo here was taken from Mahia Peninsula this morning. Could it be ash from the Tongan eruption?

Re: General May Weather
Yes. I have noticed that too. Just like the purply skies the other evening.
Anyway, a blue dome cloudless sky today with light winds. 16.2C the maximum for today.

Yes, the sunrises (particularly) and sunsets in Christchurch have been beautiful lately. I get up for a 30 min run at 6:45am and the sunrises the past few weeks have been fantastic gradients from yellow>orange>purple>blueharleyb wrote: ↑Mon 23/05/2022 22:16 Has anyone noticed the strange morning and evening twilight skies in the last few weeks? I watched that sunset from up high, did a 50km mission from Hilltop to Home to celebrate turning 50. It was a wonderful sunsetJP. wrote: ↑Tue 24/05/2022 16:33Yes, the sunrises (particularly) and sunsets in Christchurch have been beautiful lately. Re: General May Weather
Another blue dome day after a frosty start. Some high cloud later in the day. Fine starry evening.
Today's maximum was 17.5C.
Weather looks interesting next week according to the models.

Re: General May Weather
I see what you mean about the texture, quite a ripply pattern discernable in the north-east here around 7:30am this morning. Also the pale purplish colour.harleyb wrote: ↑Mon 23/05/2022 22:16 Has anyone noticed the strange morning and evening twilight skies in the last few weeks? Some cold showers are modelled along the SI east coast tonight, coldest of the year so far(low level cold air). Some warm weather next week.
