The cold air passing over warmer than average SST's certainly helped to produce a lot of lightning for New Zealand. This MetService tweet gives a flavour - the figures are for the 7 days to 03:30 this morning (Tues 14th June):

Thank goodness I timed it right to come up to Wellington region for a visit as I wouldn't seen any of the strikes from Geraldine, except from a few flashes along the Alps late at night.
Glad of the strikes I recorded on my new phone but basically it wasn't a real photographic exhibition of these storms as most of the lightning observed was within the grey overcast cloud layers that moved over from the west with this system.
No real pearlers of thunder apart from a couple of dumps I heard way far off from the Belmont Hill region late one night from where we are staying.
Anyway looks like settled weather in the region for the rest of our stay.
