General August Weather
Any comments?
Very stormy as we work through the last month of Winter into Spring?
Any more La Nina "Tuesday" storms from La Nina like in July?

Yes, a mainly dry week ahead for many apart from western parts of the South Island. Mild from mid week.

Re: General August Weather
A frosty start to August well for the first day anyway, but a milder week with the NW flow. Also a very similar set up to the big NW winds about a week ago, will be severe gales through the high country with some gale force winds on the plains.
I'm sure some trees will have some rather sodden soil around them so this could be an issue even in gale force.
The following week from the 8th looks very wet again at this stage.

Re: General August Weather
Lovely to have the NW wind again which came though a with burst around 1.00pm, now a steady moderate wind, perfect time to load up the clothes line after so much damp weather, only 11 deg, at least a dry 11deg tends to feel warmer than a high humidity 11deg.

Reports of flooding around Otematata from heavy rain. Won't take much at present to kick all that off

Re: General August Weather
I heard at the Barbers shop today (No Mike, I wasn't having a haircut between thunderstorms) that SH8 was closed near Twizel because of a tree blown over blocking the road. Not much wind here in Geraldine today.

Re: General August Weather
Warmish day here well this morning with today's maximum being 19.1C.
Overthrow rain this afternoon with 1.7mm falling.
Clearing away later this afternoon.
NW winds strong earlier in the day but easing away later this afternoon after the rain moved away to the NE.
Fine evening but the NW freshening a bit this evening.

Re: General August Weather
Another 11.4mm of rain overnight has brought the water table back up where it was after the last lot of rain, and I see the models have the likelihood of another rainfall event early next week.

Re: General August Weather
I’ve got 6mm in my rain gauge from yesterday afternoon and the same thing has happened here. It fell in the space of about an hour and my yard had several areas of ponding again.

Talking with a ( 68yo) farmer yesterday, he was saying that he is seeing ponding where he's never seen it before.darcyplumb wrote: ↑Wed 03/08/2022 07:56

Re: General August Weather
My yard is the same - the only other year I’ve had ponding like this in my yard was 2017 (I’ve been at the property since 2014).Richard wrote: ↑Wed 03/08/2022 08:46Talking with a ( 68yo) farmer yesterday, he was saying that he is seeing ponding where he's never seen it before.darcyplumb wrote: ↑Wed 03/08/2022 07:56

Re: General August Weather
EC Deterministic model is wanting to put 850hpa temps of -8C about Christchurch for 9 hours Sunday night through to Monday morning, , that's almost definitely snow at sea level with those temps but we will have to see multiple model runs at that temperature before we can start becoming excited

Re: General August Weather
EC is not alone with the cold 850Ts. For midday Monday GFS is at -5, Gem at -6, Access at -6.9, EC -8.4. Gem, Access, and EC all keep those temps below -5 through into next Thursday.Bradley wrote: ↑Wed 03/08/2022 10:04 EC Deterministic model is wanting to put 850hpa temps of -8C about Christchurch for 9 hours Sunday night through to Monday morning, , that's almost definitely snow at sea level with those temps but we will have to see multiple model runs at that temperature before we can start becoming excited
