Chch Aero needs less than 10mm more to crack 300mm for July. Almost half the average annual rainfall

Re: Developing Low Pressure - Upper South Island/ Lower North Island 30/31 July
I've just been woken up to very heavy rain this morning with small hail stones mixed in I'd say about pea sized.
Surely we have now cracked 300mm for July, at my work our natural moats have burst into the park for the first time in 8 years.
The moats are both stormwater and aquifer fed from the mountains, and I would say the streams of water over the roads will be much stronger by Monday.
It's a drying out phase for next week with milder temperatures, but strong to gale NW winds could very easily fell trees around higher than normal waterways.

Also woken up in the CBD at 6:30am and again now at 7:15am to some of the heaviest rainfall this whole month. Incredible amount of water on the ground now. Airport has had 14mm since midnight.

Interesting how the temperature dipped briefly low enough for the rain to turn to snow and then back to rain again. What would do this I wonder?

Looks like the initial snow forecasts for Marlborough were correct but the last minute adjustments for snow in mid-Canterbury were substantially off (not being critical of anyone). A friend in Sheffield (320m asl) sent a pic of her backyard and it’s not even 1cm and Springfield would be lucky to be 2-3cm…

the SW change and chain showers that moved through canterbury would have had a marine layer warming (re the increase in the temperature)
cold wintry squally showers here and gale SW winds (gusting 90kmh)

Been up the Port Hills this afternoon. Small patches of snow remaining on southern aspects especially, down to about 400m elevation.

Drove from Ashburton to the base of Mt Hutt early this morning. Snow not as thick or as low as forecast, Only a few Cm at Awa Awa reserve (510masl). Hiked up the ridge directly behind and snow become much thicker from 600masl mark with a good 15-20cm on top the ridge 700-750masl

A persistent and quite vigorous convergence zone off the Kapiti coast this evening, the cb tops looked stunning from Palmy North at sunset.
