Re: General August Weather
Picked up 7mm here today. Was quite blustery around 5pm, picture from the usually serene Eastern beach.

Re: General August Weather
It appears the Wellington + Christchurch areas have had their wettest winter on record.
https://twitter.com/MetService/status/1 ... 8393686019
Would this still be the case if they had used the much longer record at Christchurch Botanic Gardens?

Re: General August Weather
I think Chch Gardens highest ever winter rainfall was 408.5mm in 1939, followed by 395.0mm in 1881 from records since 1864. However, its total so far this winter is only about 316mm, or about 330mm at NIWA's new EWS there.Simon Culling wrote: ↑Thu 25/08/2022 23:20 It appears the Wellington + Christchurch areas have had their wettest winter on record.

Also note that 309.8mm of Chch Aero's 393.4mm this winter was recorded in July, whereas Jun and Aug there were/are below normal.

As someone who has been viewing these webcams for 16 years, this is what this view should look like in late Nov to early Dec, to see it in late August is off the scale.

Re: General August Weather
they have just fired the other day a 3rd of the staff ..both fields are currently closed ..August is normally the snowiest month
the winter of 1998 was similar for lack of snow (i.e lots of warm rain to wash it away),. yes?

Re: General August Weather
Saw a lot of cars going through Geraldine with skis on their roofs. Must be heeding for Queenstown for the winter festival. Even though the snow level is retreating here and possibly along the Alps, there must be enough snow for this festival to eventuate.
Anyway, it was a mixed day of cloud levels and sunshine at times with a clearance to the south. Went to Fairlie today. The odd shower now and then driving down SH 79. Today's maximum was 14.5C. with hardly any wind.

Re: General August Weather
Some colder air reaching northern NZ over coming days but it should be mainly fine for Auckland.
The lowest temperature at Auckland airport last 12 days has been 10.7C, the run of warm nights is coming to an end.

Re: General August Weather
1998 was before I had learned to ski, but read about it being a horror season. One difference is that the fields had little or no snowmaking facilities in those days. I suspect this season is even worse, would need a historian to answer this but possibly there has not been this little snow at end of Aigust since the first lifts were installed in the late 1950's, I don't remember reading about any season being worse than 1998.Awhituobs wrote:they have just fired the other day a 3rd of the staff ..both fields are currently closed ..August is normally the snowiest month

Re: General August Weather
And here's Mt Taranaki this afternoon courtesy of the Geonet webcam. I have never seen so little snow there at this time of year, it should be metres deep and down to the tussock at about 1500 m, near the top of the low level cloud in the pic. Incredible!

Re: General August Weather
After a frost this morning, it was fine initially but during the morning the clagg moved in and remained all day. Today's maximum was 11.1C before the clagg moved in. Light SE.

Re: General August Weather
The clagg from yesterday reduced itself today by clearing but higher level cloud remaining which did clear for a wee while allowing the sun to come through. Today's maximum was 14.3C with a light SE wind.

Re: General August Weather
A near record warm August overall and possibly NZ's warmest winter on record for the 3rd consecutive year. It was also very wet in some parts, including record or near record August rainfalls and flooding around the Far North, New Plymouth, Wellington, Nelson/Tasman and West Coast areas.

Re: General August Weather
August was 1.0C above average here. Just looking at some year to date stats and every month this year has been at least 0.8C above normal.
120mm for the month which is slightly below the long term average.
