Yes I enjoyed a few storms driving from Manawatu to Whanganui thru to North Taranaki this arvo. This cell heading off the coast near Ohakea. Also some nice flashes to be seen further north later on coming from a dying cell near Taumarunui.NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote: ↑Fri 23/09/2022 18:50 It looked as though that there was thunderstorms in the North Island today??
Nothing on here.
Was there?

Re: General September Weather
Nice little splash of rain yesterday around lunch time, I was only expecting a few drops of rain.
I'm not seeing this thunderstorm risk this afternoon, very minimal risk if that as there's too many variables missing to get storms developing.
There is instability numbers and the abruptness of warm to cold air on front arrival, but that's definitely not enough to get storms going.
A good 20+mm overnight for some areas though.

Southerly through here just now. All we have to do is wait for the low stratus and clagg to move in before the rain.

Here's a photo of the southerly change taken just down the road from here. No evidence of any thunderstormic activity with this change, I'm sorry.

Re: General September Weather
I don't know why the forecasters overforcast thunderstorm activity when under this La Nina weather regime at the moment, conditions for this event seems unlikely? well here in Canterbury.
Is it because of this climate change issue which you have to go for the worst scenario in order to protect lives etc.?
This is the 3rd time in a row that forecasts have mentioned thunderstorm activity likely on a cold southerly change when it is obvious that nothing interesting will happen.
Boring weather

Yes they are not having a good run of predictions.
