For reference this grapevine has been growing in this spot since 2003. There has been no change to structure around it or overhead canopy. It has never been protected. It has never shown any damage to spring growth until this event.Image

Cant see that it will have much effect, its frost that damages fruit blossom, which they haven't had. Even the light frosts here wouldn't have damaged my stone fruit blossoms, its about -3 and under that is the problem for fruit growers.
Frost damage can take a while to fully show up and can be very local. The Spring growing season starts earlier this end of NZ. Hamilton went down to -2.9C on Friday morning while parts of South Auckland will have had ground frost.
Yep if they are in any frost pockets certainly, hadnt heard it had gone down that low for Hamilton.
Its not so much the blossom but the tiny developing fruit that get damaged

What has not been affected that I can see are any of the normal deciduous ornamental trees, even small ones with very tender looking new leaves out, or any ornamental blossoms Can't tell anything has happened if only look at them.

The best memory is not as good as faded ink but I don't remember -3C in October in the last 20 years. I recorded a min -1.1 on my station solely due to heat radiating off buildings I think.
Yes, Oct records for both Hamilton and Rotorua Aero's...

Ruakura's -2.0C this morning was also its 2nd lowest Oct temp from records since 1907. Only -2.2C in 1933 was colder.

Here's a few more Auckland temps this morning from NIWA:
0.8C .. Pukekohe
1.8C .. Motat
2.4C .. Albany
2.5C .. Mangere
I imagine there could've easily been several record low daytime maximums on Thursday in North Island. (and South Island the day before)

Yes, max temps were well below normal in the North Island on Thursday, but probably not low enough to be record breaking?

Invercargill Aero and Dunedin Aero came close on Wednesday:

Yea certainly some frost damage around here. More than we would typically get in an October or even November frost.

This was the temp inside the bedroom at the bach on Friday morning. Maybe we should think about getting some insulation...

This air came through Macquarie Island before it reached NZ and according to the BOM pages this station broke its October minimum record with a low of -6.0°C on 5th October. The old record was -4.6°C which was set on 26/10/1969. The record extends back to 1948.
