General December Weather
It's going to be hot from tomorrow for the next 3 months according to media reports.
Might don a T shirt and shorts and jandals from tomorrow and go down to the local swimming baths for a swim.
Makes a change from this freezing weather and have to be wearing heavy clothing and having the fire going like tonight.

Re: General December Weather
This afternoon I had an encounter with a strong whirlwind, the wind whipped over the top of me and then picked up several small branches from a dumped pile high into the air as they swirled in a circle.
It then moved about 50m away before hitting some willow and pine trees bending them one direction then the other.
Nothing major but I'd estimate the gusts to be around 45-50kmh enough to hear and see.
At the time there were no clouds present however the wind did swing to the NE from SW at the time, so a mixture of Convergence and heat rising and cooling is what I've come up with.
Anyway some heavy convective showers this evening, wind still NE but will swing back Southerly overnight with more rain.
This southerly phase is going to bring more thunderstorm chances as we move into the peak time.

Re: General December Weather
A generally fine day here today with ENE refreshing at times this afternoon.
Some interesting cloud form to the west this afternoon, probably better than yesterday's forecast for here from MS but nevermind.
Today's maximum was 21.6C.

Hello Storm Struck, this sounds like a dust devil.

Christchurch Airport has now recorded 1005mm in the last 12 months from 01/12/2021, absolutely incredible figure which would be a record for the airport site no doubt...

Re: General December Weather
Looking very dark to my south with what appears to be a thunderstorm developing on radar. Big towers inland along the foothills as well. We’ve had about two hours of sunshine here which appears to have been enough to get things going.

Hot today. got a dose of heatstroke up the Port Hills
I am very interesting in the weather around Queenstown next weekend. The models are really flipping around but generally looks unsettled, even with a hint of some fairly low snow come Sunday? What does the Weatherforum Hivemind think?

I'd pick that the trough will keep the cold air at bay, so mild & humid with a wet Saturday, dry Sunday.Razor wrote: ↑Sun 04/12/2022 22:05 Hot today. got a dose of heatstroke up the Port Hills

Re: General December Weather
The current cloud over Auckland should burn back from many places by early afternoon. It was great to have the sunny weekend.
Incoming moisture from mid week onto NZ will create some unstable weather days, see how it looks on the day or the day before.

Even though yesterday was rather warm here. I still haven't got the shorts and T shirt and Sjaelland on, to cook tea on the barbecue.
Coat on today to go up town and might have to light the fire

Obviously the spell-checker doesn't recognize the word Jandals ?NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote: ↑Mon 05/12/2022 19:03 . I still haven't got the shorts and T shirt and Sjaelland on, to cook tea on the barbecue.
....anyway, an overcast day all day with low cloud and drizzle this afternoon with 0,9mm of drizzle to 10pm.
Today's maximum was 16C. Clagg

Re: General December Weather
Probably because 'Jandals' isn't considered a proper word, but rather a registered brandname for a particular type of NZ 'flip-flops' or 'thongs'. Local retailers often get into trouble for unwittingly advertising similar products as 'Jandals', when legally they're not.NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote: ↑Mon 05/12/2022 22:39 Obviously the spell-checker doesn't recognize the word Jandals ?

Re: General December Weather
Severe weather outlook looking interesting. I wasn't expecting to see "high confidence" based on the GFS modelling.

Re: General December Weather
Will this summer become the warmest ever?
Doesn't look like it initially, with apart from one warm day (Sunday) so far this month, clagg has remained the main ingredient for the summer here.
11C at the moment and doing dishes in the sink after tea, the windows steamed up like a cold day in winter?

Re: General December Weather
After a mild start with high cloud, the clagg rolled in late morning with another southerly change.
17.1C before the change but cooled down as the clagg rolled in.
Occasional drizzle showers also this afternoon with 0.6mm of it falling today.
