Severe risk Canterbury Plains 24th - 25th Dec
Surprised no one has already started a thread given the possibility of severe storms on the Canterbury plains.
The sky has a whole different look compared to yesterday, clouds are building fast and all round atm, yesterday the cloud buildups and later storms were all inland which died moving out to the coast. Today there were tall clouds out to sea, which is another good sign for Canterbury

Yes metservice might be onto something today. The clouds look different and much more punchy already with big towers going up.Richard wrote: ↑Sat 24/12/2022 12:03 Surprised no one has already started a thread given the possibility of severe storms on the Canterbury plains.

Storm about to kick off around Hallswel Tai Tapu now, big towers going up and heavy shower on the radar.

I see what you mean about the "different" look of the sky: there are cold-looking bubbly clouds and some dark mean-looking raggedy ones below, anything could come out of thosemikestormchaser wrote: ↑Sat 24/12/2022 12:14Yes metservice might be onto something today. It’s the same here in Ashburton. I can see the towering cumulus through the haze.

Re: Severe risk Canterbury Plains 24th Dec
A few heavy showers forming around Darfield in the last half an hour, seem to be building fast.
The upper level won't do much to storm development as the surface temperatures are still good.

Few distant peals of thunder here, but only a smattering of rain drops.

Re: Severe risk Canterbury Plains 24th Dec
There's still quite a strong storm moving up the plains, looks like a southerly might be giving it a boost.
Best time of the year for night time thunderstorms given the right conditions.

Another severe warning from MS, for the storm that appears to be intensifying again on the upper plains. Some lovely rumbles here in town at the moment.

That spot west of Ashburton seems to be a magic spot. Storms always form/hit/hover there. Always.
