The constant prying eyes of the MetService looking into the forum without contributing in anyway or form?

I'm 100% sure they come in here to look at what we think with forecasts, look at our reports etc.
I don't either disagree or agree with it so...

Your thoughts please?

(I just always get the feeling of big brother behind my back now)

Could use this forum as "another model" ???
People are not ignorant and because of this, if there is a particular interest, gather as much information from whatever is available, even from amateurs

i think its good if they check up on reports of weather events,....its like having an eye on the ground, to back up or make them update forecasts/warnings
if i were sitting in kelburn, i would love to see images of CB's up this way, much better thatn jus seeing them on rain radar or sat picy!

there has been some met service forecasters contribute at times, but i think they probably are only allowed to do so in their own spare time...it migth be frowned upon during work time
would it not be great if observers on the ground, with local knowledge, could work with them on a forum discuccions for preparing warnhings/advisories, etc?

Agreed. They make a great deal of data accessible to the public.

It's a shame though that they (and other outfits like them) have been so corporatized.

Now the inherent scientific elitism is compounded by a desire to make money.

Hi Folks,

Thought I would sign on and introduce myself.

I am one of the severe convection meteorologists that work for Metservice and am involved in the issuance of those threat charts we post.

I would like to congratulate your group of contributors on your enthusiasm for weather and in particular thunderstorms and severe weather. I for one am impressed with the effort that some of you go to with regard setting up weather stations, the posting of digital images of whats happening and even installing lightning detectors!

I also find the reports of such things as hail occurrence and size, and heavy rainfall - whether measured or subjectively described and the like, very useful. There are only a limited number of ways by which we get this sort of information. Other ways are the media, reports direct from the public or perhaps from some of the rain gauge networks etc. So your reports are very useful.

I look forward to contributing from time to time.

Welcome to the forum. I wouldn't bother listening to anyone harping on about "prying eyes" and such, after all its a "Forum" which means anyone can "pry" if need be. Its all about exchange of info, and if metservice come on here to get info, then you for one foggy should be stoked that your reports and predictions are so valuable to the metservice.

keep up the good work metservice, i for one appreciate the info that you make available to the general public.

Hi Paul and welcome to the Forum from one of the Lightning detector guys..
The Convection forecasts are one of the best Public additions to the metservice products I think!
"Severe Convection Meteorologist" now there's a title!

As I said, I didn't agree nor disagree

But yes welcome! It would be great if a MetService employee could contribute regulary.. like the weatherzone forums.
