My partner is in Mt Somers township, no snow falling and barely raining. Certainly cold enough up there though.

Re: General March Weather
It was sleeting up there earlier today for about half an hour. He’s working outside and did the classic ‘I won’t need a jersey today’ when he left the house this morning… Lake Heron is always stunning in the snow, well in any weather really.Dean. wrote: ↑Tue 28/03/2023 13:28Ok typical social media settling further inland anyhow Screenshot_20230328_132651_Samsung Internet.jpgdarcyplumb wrote:

Rain Clearing away here now in south Canterbury, although still looks showery out towards the coast. Snow well down on the foothills.

Re: General March Weather
Radar is showing a decent squall line developing and moving onshore. Very very dark towards the coast.

Re: General March Weather
Squall line has hit here. Very gusty winds, rain is horizontal and mixed with soft hail/graupel.

Re: General March Weather
Very cool or cold to see those snow levels abit lower today than first initially thought, although could be part due to very strong upper level winds cutting across from the NW.
The icy showers of hail and graupel will be the result of the colder upper air shifting up the east coast this evening, at around -32c on the 500mb.
Should be fairly brief for a 3-4 hour period as the air shifts more over the Chatams, after that into tomorrow should be general showers although sometimes heavy.
Must of been some lightning near Ellesmere earlier with that heavier band as the tracker picked up a few strikes.

Dry/droughts don't last forever but still a bit to go before the south catches up with Auckland's rainfaill....

Re: General March Weather
Dark wintry showers moved over here like a "Claytons" thunderstorm with dark skies and a few spits of graupel around 4pm after it cleared up for a while.

Re: General March Weather
Another squall blowing through at the moment and the cloud to the west has that yellowish tinge of snow or something... 6.7°C at the moment and looks most unpleasant outside.
Also, thought I heard a clap of thunder earlier, I see some red and purple on the rain-radar so maybe possible.

Could be. Just had a brief hail shower here. Scattered wintry pin head sized hail.

Just had a decent hail shower move over rolleston. Dusted the ground white. Heard a clap of thunder a little earlier too.
Models pin pointed this outbreak well. Alot colder than what we have had recently. Taste of Winter for sure

Frequent showers between Akaroa and Chch, some with hail. A bit of sleet over Hilltop, but no snow visible on the hills.

It was a1in 200 year rain event for Auckland in January.Flutterbye wrote: ↑Tue 28/03/2023 16:29Dry/droughts don't last forever but still a bit to go before the south catches up with Auckland's rainfaill....
It might end up a wet year in the deep south with the trend toward El Nino.

Re: General March Weather
Interesting day weathwize with the cold southerly change moving through this morning causing some instability in the skies with rather cold temperatures in behind the cold front after the warm day yesterday.
Today's maximum of 14C was recorded overnight before the wind change which reduced the temperature to single figure digits for the rest of the day with the cold south to SW wind. 7.7mm of rain here from the southerly including a brief hail shower around 7pm.
Today's daytime maximum was just 8.7C, when it cleared up just before a resurgence of wintry showers around 4pm.
Here's a photo of a hail shower taken from the back door looking north as the sun shone on the hail shower

Massive downpour with decent sized hail over the last 20 minutes here in Southern CHCH. Whole lawn is white!

Re: General March Weather
Yes. There seems to be a lot of those type of showers moving north out to the east of here and coming into shore north of about Ashburton.
