Looks very unstable over Northland currently, thunderstorms developing over the land today, yesterday they were developing more over the sea.

A fifth tornado has struck in the Bay Of Plenty, thankfully just orchards and trees damaged instead of homes.
Just goes to show the mixing of sub tropical air in autumn and a complex slow moving low system.
For reference here is a link which shows the scale of the tornado near Mapua in the Tasman district, I am thinking this may have started as a waterspout on the coastline and headed inland.
Damage and the width of the tornado suggests to me perhaps around EF1?
The video shows it well with the forestry damage.

Some of the damage in the Tasman district points to quite a strong tornado, large trees pulled out of ground + snapped in half, tar seal lifted off road.
Some instability and convergence is modelled over the upper North Island this afternoon, see what can develop this afternoon.

Re: General April Weather
i now live in flat bush. (haven't posted in a while) looks to be ef0 damage ? I had a little peep to the damaged homes. quite close to where i am.spwill wrote: ↑Mon 10/04/2023 08:59 I seem to remember the Albany and Papatoetoe tornadoes were from non thunderstorm Cbs.
With last night's event the damage path is quite long and is about a house or two wide so looks like a tornado. There was another tornado in the East Tamaki suburb just 2km away in 2020 and nearby the Papatoetoe tornado in 2021.
I had a look at the damage path this morning and will post some photos. Damage is light but still a bit of a clean up for those affected.
golflands in botany was also hit by a tornado in 2007 i think.
