I disagree, Canterbury plains is the best, becuse og the nature of the land and that its the closest we have to the plains of the midwest..
Agreed spwill, steve you'd be suprised at the plains we have, especially the Hauraki swamp district in the north. The Hamilton-Te Awamutu road which is mainly on a ridge beside the basin gives great views, but especially the SH 29 road to Tauranga on the Kaimai Summit. The views are stunning :)

Not to mention the amount of Canterbury thunderstorm days can be counted using just one hand ;)

For a place to be good for viewing you, uh, actually have to have some thunderstorms to look at in the first place. Therefore Waikato is the winner hands down.

Yeah, cantab is no doubt a great place to observe thunderstorms. It's just that the Waikato get alot more storms hence it's got the upper hand.

Great pic spwill. Wish I could see a Sb like that soon.

Cheers

Yes a great shot :D . spwill literally stole my thunder with that photo from his southeastern view. Was lining up a full-bodied sunset Cb photo like that until the useless stratocumulus developed on the Hamilton side of the storm during sunset :x

Some unstable looking clouds this evening, but no showers in central Chch. Seems (from the little I can see from my place) to be more cloud to the north, and clearer skies to the south.

Yes! Despite the interesting cloud forms, not much of a southerly change despite of the 1 I had put up for today. Quite windy from 7pm when the southerly came through.
Interesting cloud forms but nothing thunderous looking/producing.
Better luck next time :)

Landscape wise yes but the climatology is different. The Midwest is open to moisture while Canterbury is cut off from moisture. If it wasn't for the humid winds off the Gulf of Mexico the midwest would not get the tornadoes.

Waikato get Thunderstorms through out the year.
Gets the moisture.

I know the East SI storms are great because I grew up down there in Otago . Would like to make a trip down there this Summer when storms are firing. :D December is the best time for them.

Inland Otago can get some mighty storms in the right situation particularly if the low level winds are moist NE. Silly season there for thunderstorms is late November to late January. The rest of the year is generally convectively dead.

Westerlies quite strong today, a rare day when Hamilton's winds are higher than Auckland's! Or isn't it?

MetServices Forecast for Christchurch today was totally rubbish?
No NW just a cold ENE from late morning, this becoming strong at times.
Remaining cloudy with a max temp here of just under 17C
The sky did indicate warmer weather though and I am aware of warmer temperatures in other eastern districts of the country.

I see at 7am Dunedin was on 12C while Omarau was 21C.
Dewpoint temperature would be higher in Dunedin.
