Rugby World Cup weather

Unread post by spwill »

Looks hot for the opening game in Paris later this week, All Blacks v France, I'm guessing this will be an advantage to the French.

850mb temperature around 19C, dewpoint around 15C. Paris 21C -33C, stuffy.

It is certainly going to be warm + sunny for the first round of games. These are the current forecasts for the games of interest:

Friday 8th September at 8pm, France v New Zealand in Paris - clear skies and around 28°C (sun will be close to setting at 8pm)

Saturday 9th September, at 8pm, England v Argentina in Marseille - clear skies and around 24°C

Ireland play Romania on Saturday afternoon in Bordeaux when it is expected to be clear and sunny and around 34°C.

EDIT: The maximum in Paris today, Monday 4th September, was 31°C.

There is what is commonly termed an 'omega block' of high pressure over Europe at the moment and it will probably not shift until the weekend. The attached chart is for around midday on Monday 4th September 2023.

Sunny and warm/hot in the middle, but very wet in Turkey, Greece and Iberia.

Kick-off is in about 15 minutes for the first game. France, along with Ireland, are the best of the European teams, so the All Blacks will need to be on top of their game tonight.

These are the METARS from the three Paris airports at 9pm local time and 15 minutes before kick-off. Spot on the forecast of a few days ago.

The next round of group games is now upon us and here are the current forecasts for the games of interest - still too hot for rugby:

Friday 15th September, New Zealand v Namibia at Toulouse at 9pm local time - clear 23°C (day - sunny + max 30°C)

Sunday 17th September, England v Japan at Nice at 9pm local time - clear 24°C (day - sunny + max 27°C)

Should be a slow cool down from now on, but next week still looks hot for the players.

The next round of pool games seem to be very well stretched out. Here are the current forecasts:

Saturday 23rd September, England v Chile at Lille at 17:45 local time - partly cloudy, sunny intervals 17°C

Friday 29th September, New Zealand v Italy at Lyon at 9pm local time - partly cloudy 19°C

Much better temperatures for the players.

We move onto the quarter finals this coming weekend and it is generally still rather warm (or even hot) over western Europe. However, it is cooling down from the north and this cooler air should have reached the north of France by the weekend.

These are the current forecasts for the games of interest:

Saturday 14th October, New Zealand v Ireland in Paris at 9pm local time - partly cloudy 13°C after a showery day

Sunday 15th October, England v Fiji in Marseille at 5pm local time - sunny 21°C

We have got to the business end of the tournament now and both England and the All Blacks are still in contention. The semi-finals will be played this weekend and here are the current forecasts - it is much cooler now than at the start of things.

Friday 20th October, Argentina v New Zealand in Paris at 9pm local time - rain showers 14°C

Saturday 21st October, England v South Africa in Paris at 9pm local time - light rain 13°C

If I were a betting man I would be favouring a New Zealand v South Africa final..............but you never know.

England just couldn't quite make it over the line - it was agonising to see the late South African try and penalty. However, the best two teams in the world at the moment have made it to the final which is going to be a tough one to call.

The final will be played on Saturday 28th October in Paris with kick off due at 9pm local time. The current forecast is for showery rain and a temperature of 14°C.

I wanted England in the final, South Africa will be very hard to beat. I think the length of the tournament has helped the All Blacks.

The third and fourth play-off game (between England + Argentina) is about to get underway in Paris where it has been a showery day with a maximum of around 15°C. As we get close to kick off time, it is currently partly cloudy and 10°C in Paris.

As a neutral watching the game, I could not help feeling that everything that could go against the All Blacks went against the All Blacks. It would have been an incredible achievement to have won the game playing with 14 men for such a long time.

Not a bad day in Paris today with scattered clouds and sunny intervals and a lunchtime temperature of 16°C.

SA really put the pressure on the ABs first half, ABs did well to come back 2nd half after losing Cane.
The Paris weather had some influence on the tournament, hot to start and wet to finish.
