General March Weather
Here comes autumn folks
And it looks like an early March visit from the polar regions which will come as a shock to the system for some areas!

Re: General March Weather
It's been an autumnal end to summer here.
March will have a few warm days but the leaves are falling off our fruit trees at the moment and there have been some claggy days to end of the summer period. Not a Hot summer here despite earlier El Nino predictions.

Re: General March Weather
Monday might be a day with some thunder around the country.
For Auckland March is a better weather month than December so Summer not over yet.

Re: General March Weather
Certainly a bit more autumnal feeling on my walks lately, up in the Waitakere ranges today there was a nice cool breeze blowing through the forest late morning, very refreshing.
Forgot to post this the other day but here's a side by side comparison of Hunua Falls 31 Dec (following a wet period) vs 28 Feb (following two drier than average months)

50mm in 4 hours here and it’s still coming down. Not even a heavy rain watch out.

Reports of wind related power outages in north Canterbury. I'm not surprised given how windy it is in Lincoln right now

Re: General March Weather
At 7am it was a strong gusty NW at the airport but a light NE in southern Christchurch, then it flicked between NE and NW just before 8am.
At work it's quite strong and gusty, I presume there will be a period before this rain band even for the city which will see some high wind gusts.
Listen out for some thunder rumbles too in that band, lightning could travel out from the high country.
24c rain band gradually getting closer.

Pouring with rain here. Wind has subsided for now thankfully. It was gusting over 90kph in town before the rain band arrived.

MS have a Severe Thunderstorm Watch from Waikato down to the Marlborough Sounds for today (with the odd small tornado possible).

Re: General March Weather
A very brief splash of rain this morning, looked interesting but not even a mil of rain.
Has remained warm and dry on 24C, strong NW with some bigger gusts the last half an hour.
I suspect the temperature will drop this afternoon as the upper air begins to cool.
Looks like there is a small cell around Rangitata on the plains currently too.
Coastal fringe storm risk tomorrow more so for Banks Peninsula, but maybe a risk later on as a small trough crosses around Christchurch northwards.
Wind will be strong SW but quite cold upper air.

Great video of that possible tornado, although the time-stamp says 8:35am...

Re: General March Weather
Gusty NW winds arrived about 6am this morning when I went out to retrieve this morning's T. Herald. Saw a flash to the west on the return to the house.

Re: General March Weather
Sky looking most unsettled around here, some odd low grey shreddy cloud to my north-east; cold wind though thermometer reads 22.9°C; not sure what's going on...
Wind seems westerly, some of that cloud in the north-east isn't sure which way it's going.

Re: General March Weather
Can see that CB action down the coastline from here.
Looks like a coastal SW is moving in, can see a faint insect line on the radar.
Might also be what is helping to get those CBs going.
