A thunderstorm risk for the upper North Island Saturday, the risk is on the low side but the upper levels are starting to look cooler, seasonal change underway.

yes it looked quite heavy on the radar. More of this weather possible tonight and tomorrow as the weak low moves through.

Yes certainly noticeable how dry things are on the Weka Pass train yesterday. Bone dry still on Banks Penininsula and the Port Hills as well. Maybe a spell of moisture on Friday but apart from that its looking more of the same

Longer range outlook (next week) has a big cold trough from the Southern Ocean, a long way out but something to watch in future model runs.

May will be a noticeably cold month, especially the first half.

A few isolated showers this afternoon albeit brief and light, also noticed some TCU forms about.
There was some lightning strikes recorded just offshore south of Banks Peninsula around lunch time too.

Good southerly flick on Friday looks quite troughy so could be a slight risk there.
Next week definitely looks more changeable.

Interesting that NIWA said in their climate outlook that sea surface temp anomaly around and to the south of NZ for the next few months won't make the season any colder, I thought the forecast was for cooler then normal sea surface temps around NZ?

Going by NOAA there's not going to be a lot in the way of a cooler water temp anomaly, though we if get a lot of SW winds during this period they should be cooler than normal one would think.

Note the blue coming across the equatorial Pacific, strong La Nina signature returning for winter.
We must be in more of a neutral phase currently.
The overnight lows are certainly cool but not quite freezing for the plains and coast because there is no snow on the mountains.
This will change especially into next week with several cold SW flicks.
Day time highs still averaging around 17 to 20C for most areas.

Just a smattering of morning showers for Friday now unfortunately.

Nice pool of cold air over south island tomorrow.
Will bring first dusting for the mountains, maybe some hail over Eastern SI and some overnight frosty temperatures

Was 11°C around 5:30am, now 9.7°C and raining with a southerly that has crept in.
Very dull, have lights on indoors.
The cloud aloft has quite a yellowish tinge... :-k

NW wind here has been quite strong at times, can see the southerly wind change to the south though.

Some coastal heavy showers swiping up the coastline this morning, in a very SW fashion.
Around lunch time until mid afternoon there is a trough that develops around mid Canterbury but semi coastal.
Still a chance for thunder and hail even for the city.
