The southerly cancelled my flight out of Queenstown late yesterday. I think quite a few flights had to be cancelled due to the cross wind. A light dusting of snow on the hils.

Some cloud overnight keeping the overnight low above freezing this morning but clearing away to become a fine sunny blue dome day with hardly any wind.
However, after sunset, cooling away with it being minus 0.6C at 10pm. Today's maximum was 11.5C.

Down to 2.1C here. My May record is 0.3C so nothing remarkable though it is unusually early in the month.

Got down to -6c here, at least at the airport station, dont think my exact area got that cold though as its more coastal, and interestingly got to over 14c, then it clouded over for much of the afternoon with some drops of rain at times.

Have arrived in Hanmer for my birthday weekend. Relatively mild 9 degrees with cloud and drizzle, hoping for a clear night tomorrow night for what looks to be very strong Aurora potential

It did not get down to the coldness that was predicted here overnight as the warmer air from the next front moved in and warmed temperatures here from early morning, so the real cold temperatures were possibly recorded north of here and more so further north as the day wore on.
From minus 2.7C around 4am, the temperature climbed to be above zero by 7am,then it got to 14.6C today with not much frost around after 9am. Mainly fine day with a cool SE wind but clouding up this evening.

After a frost this morning, a fine day eventuated but becoming cloudier as the day wore on. however it did clear up this evening so we could see the solar storms created from strong sun spot activity on the sun. Today's maximum was 12.4C.

Aurora in Hanmer for our Mothers Day/ Birthday weekend... I think we were the only place under clouds after a magnificent blue dome day. What a shame.

Clear and frosty tonight so perfect for aurora watching from up on the roof... In hindsight, it was a bit of a dumb thing to do with the roof being pretty slippery, but the aurora was stunning. The best I've ever seen in NZ. :-)

Back to average temperatures this week.
The cold low system showing in the models for early next week would be good for our ski fields, still a week out though.

Christchurch Airport averaging -0.4C for a minimum for the first 13 days of the month, a full 1.6C colder then the coldest May on record at that site which averaged 1.2C for a minimum in May 1988, absolutely remarkable considering these temps have occurred at the start of the month too 8-o

Looks like that will correct back up over the next 2 weeks, I'd say no more frosts for a while by the looks of the models

In terms of minimum temps for sure but the maximums are going to go the other way - even with the next few days in mind from Saturday there is a prolonged cold, showery spell which will bring the average maximum temps down for the month...

The southerly hasn't been particularly cold lately as far as snow levels are concerned (snowed to lower levels in the south this time last year), but the clear skies and lighter winds following allowed the severe early frosts.
