In terms of minimum temps for sure but the maximums are going to go the other way - even with the next few days in mind from Saturday there is a prolonged cold, showery spell which will bring the average maximum temps down for the month...
Arent they already below average for may? not excited for more prolonged cold
Yep the maximum temp for May is also running around 0.6C below the longterm average as well, over the next few weeks judging by Tony's forecast the maximum temp anomaly will get even lower and the minimum temps will start becoming warmer

Your figure of -0.4C looks to be based on midnight reset times, whereas the May 1988 record of 1.2C is based on 9am reset times. So you're kinda comparing apples with oranges. :-k

The problem with using midnight reset times, at least for the last 13 days, is that 2 consecutive calendar days will often show extreme Tmins recorded on the same night i.e., one just before midnight and one not long after midnight.

So based on 9am reset times, Chch Aero's average Tmin for the first 13 days is around 0.9C, which is 0.3C colder than its May 1988 record and 3.0C below its 1991-2020 normal. Its average Tmax of 13.5C for the first 13 days is also about 1.2C below its 1991-2020 normal.

MS's T-storm Outlook includes a low risk of the odd small tornado for the upper N.I. tomorrow (northwards of coastal Nth Taranaki and western BoP in the morning and the rest of the BoP in the afternoon).

Blue dome skies for much of the day, down to around 0.5°C and up to 15.6°C.

Some mares' tails and contrails visible in the western sky from late afternoon.

Big contrast here also, from - 4.2 deg up to 15.9 with a light NW wind late afternoon, died away as the sun set though.

That is good to know in regards to the 9am reset times, I wasn’t aware NIWA and Metservice measure their minimum temperatures differently! Crazy stuff

26mm here this morning, with about 21mm of that falling in the hour to 7am.

Plenty of lightning around eastern Coromandel and the BoP this morning. MS also issued 2 Severe Thunderstorm Warnings earlier for the BoP.

Also reports of a "possible tornado" in Thames around 9am this morning, although that looks more likely to have been a strong squall.

According to Nev's report it was a squall. There haven't been any reports of any tornadoes with this event ut then some may of occured in areas without anyone recording them on their smartphones.

Below average everywhere in NZ for the first 15 days, not surprising

Stiffish southerly has blown up, enough to move/topple some rubbish bins out on the footpath, and bang a door shut inside the house.
Clouding up, 11.4°C now.

We had that blow through around 1pm. I was in Rolleston and the time, it was quite an impressive albeit harmless display of cloulds

That S wind charged through here at a great rate of knots also, all rather harmless as you say Razor despite a moderate storm risk warning

Fine this morning but a strong southerly moved through late morning. Nothing with it but it gradually clouded over with harmless cloud during the afternoon and remaining rather cloudy. Southerly died out late afternoon with light and variant winds from then on mainly from the north.
11.7C our maximum for today. Clearing late this evening.

No frost this morning in Alexandra, this after 10 days in a row. Certainly a cool month here as well.

An odd feel to the air outside this morning. Decent frost on the ground and elevated surfaces but the air itself feels quite warm. I was surprised when I went outside to feed the animals at how warm it felt. Temp says 4 degrees C but the pockets of warm wind make it feel a lot warmer.

It’s now a very mild 16 degrees C. If it was July, I would be very suspicious of what’s to come 😂
