I observed this well structured Cb about 3.30pm over SE Auckland today. Observed some great CG lightning from this cloud. The rain was very heavy with bursts of hailstones.
Developing Thunderstorm over Auckland about 3.30pm today.
TS approaching. This arcus looked fantastic.
Close up of earlier photo.

Yes Aaron, the Canon G5 has a photo stitch function. The lense is 35mm to 140mm optical. I find the 35mm a bit limiting so I guess the photo stitch function compensates for this.
I am not happy with yesterdays photos, but I am still learning with this camera. The weekend was a great opportunity to get good storm shots for my album and I missed out a bit.

I can see how it caused heavy rain and hail, there's a big rain shaft in the pic which looks intense!
The panorama function should be usefull, I've many a time tried to take panorama shots with a film type camera and they just don't turn out as well, your's a great!
First thing I want to do when I get my first digi camera is take it out and practice with bulb on something like a cloudy sky with the city lights etc so I am ready when a Ts comes along.
Cheers

Looking at the pictures above.....
Aaron, the first picture looks to be an old colapsing cell to the left and a new developing cell centre (with a dark base). Second picture is the developing cell about 5minutes later when it was quite close. This cell produced 5 quite intense CG's as I watched it approach. It was a quite a spectacular cloud with a bell-shaped structure which I failed to capture in the photography.
here is a pciture of the shower from this storm which lasted about 10minutes with intermittent solid pea sized hail. Could well have been larger hail in the area.

Cool Steven, Lucky!
You know how that day Brian did a post and said there was a really strong squall that went through his place with frequent thunder/lightning, well this is a picture Pete Mcghee took from up in Northland that day of a small funnel cloud, here is his report:
Pic of the funnel cloud
Extreme close up!
16:40Hrs 17/9/03 - Matauri Bay, Far North.
I was heading home, and had been watching this strong multicell in the
hour before I left which was looking promising. Nice straight back,
crisp top and definite corkscrewing showing in the sides. As soon as
the whistle went, I headed out away from the hills so I could get a good
view of the beast. On the way to my favourite viewing possie (a lookout
on the clifftop) I spotted the cloud lowering through a gap in the
hills. Looking good methinks.
The next gap showed a loose tail definitely starting to form and start
to snake around, I decided that I wasn't going to get to the lookout in
time to get a clear shot so made a quick U-turn and fired off a frame
just before the thing choked.
This was taken on one of those "disposable" cameras loaded with Fuji
200ASA film - Always keep one in the car
There you go.
Cheers
