Re: General August Weather
There was some good hail/rain roar as it was approaching.
Bah, it was just the wind I heard really.

Re: General August Weather
Just gale wind and rain here at the Uni, and the odd hailstone. Its possible there was thunder but the wind was so loud it could have drowned it out

Re: General August Weather
A bit of hail in the rain here too. Haven't heard any thunder. (wind gusts might've blocked the sound)

Re: General August Weather
That was spectacular the gust front was not only fast moving but the most pitch black I've seen for awhile.
Wind gusts maximum 70+kmh with heavy rain and horizontal pea sized hail.
Also one long roll of thunder sounded like over eastern Christchurch way.
Two photos of the gust front 2 minutes apart below

Re: General August Weather
I heard one clap of thunder that sounded like someone dropping a bowling ball. ' dump thunder' quickly snuck out the back of rolleston during work and climbed over a farmers fence to take this shot.
From today's weather patterns spring is here early. Or signs of seasons changing.

One casualty from today's winds, a wattle tree although ultimately I've been expecting this to come down as it was hollow in the middle.

Photo via Mark Gee, the awesome Wellington astrophotographer who loves the weather too!
Taken from Miramar looking towards in the direction of the Brooklyn wind turbine.
Heaps of other pics on social media, but Mark’s is one of the most impressive from the front passing thru this afternoon.

Re: General August Weather
I was walking the Manawatu Gorge track when the front arrived with a roar through the forest. I first got pelted with rain, then hail, and then twigs and small branches. Not ideal. The temperature dropped from 14 to 6!

Re: General August Weather
After the "Southerly Buster" gust front passed through around 11.15am, the day gradually cleared away from the south and became a blue dome day with light winds.
Today's maximum was 14C. 1.7mm for today with most of falling before dawn.

Re: General August Weather
Was out taking Aurora pics last night. Wow what a night for it, in fact with the lunch time storm what a day in total for the skies.
Strong aurora present all night, I caught 2 large bursts, one at at Lake Ellesmere 8-10pm and then an intense display visible beams and colour from home in Christchurch just after midnight. Remarkable.

Re: General August Weather
No Aurora tonight to be seen tonight, the first quarter moon hindering observation anyway, after frost this morning a fine day eventuated with some scraps of high cloud and cirrus. Today's maximum was 13C.

Re: General August Weather
Humid air moves onto the upper North Island at the weekend with unsettled weather. At this stage any thunderstorm risk looks like being on Sunday with the upper level cooling. Winter has been fairly stable this year, the quietest Winter I can remember for heavy showers/thunder in Auckland.
Edit, I should add EC brings instability in late Saturday.

Re: General August Weather
last thunder day was in the end of may here in papakura. that was the day when multiple clusters moved in. and a orange wind warning was issued that day.spwill wrote: ↑Wed 14/08/2024 11:44 Humid air moves onto the upper North Island at the weekend with unsettled weather.
