Well the thunderstorms and hail didn't eventuate here but it was an interesting day weather wise with unstable cloud forms and very strong southerly winds with the wind change this afternoon. Today's maximum was 18.9C. Strong westerly winds this afternoon before the gust front come through around 4pm. A small shower around 6pm delivered 0.1mm of rain.
Some pictures from today.

Just had a burst of heavy hail here, small probably no bigger than 5mm.
Will check gauge in the morning, must be up around 15mm now for this event.

Think two key factors played a role in not allowing good storm development today. The dry strong westerly prior and low dew point temperatures.
Which I did note the other day.
Usually the other components of such cold upper air coming in, and a strong upper jet would help assist this.
Simply if it stayed NE like this morning we would have been all on.

I agree with this, Jason. If this did happen, then there could of been hailstones up to 2cm and thunderstorm activity up to the STW standard that MS put out at 1pm. MS use the term 'possible' when forecasting thunderstorms, which to me, means it may not happen and in most cases here it hasn't happened.

Heavy hail last night with winds gusting very strongly. Eased up now; can see a dusting of snow above about 750m on the tops on the other side of the harbour.

With a moderate risk of storms here today it should be a day where storms if they do develop will be slow moving.

I'm not quite seeing what MS is saying today Richard but Hopefully you do get something none the less. There is a convergence zone around your way this afternoon though.

It may be that the Maori word intended was rautupu?

Warm yesterday, up to 30°C.
Now 17.3°C and the sky has gone from scarlet to a conspicuous lemon-yellow. Nor-west arch at present.
Received wisdom would tell me there is going to be a change to rain and wind in the next 24 hours or so.

Now: 17.4°C, 48% humidity, 1007.7hPa

Heading to the A&P show here in Waimate soon. I see there is a low chance of isolated thunderstorms here later this afternoon.
