Australia has had a lot of thunderstorms recently, mainly in eastern areas compared to anywhere else on Earth.

A very photogenic waterspout was seen near Dampier (in the Pilbara region of Western Australia) on Monday (13th Jan) morning.

Some crazy footage online of the storm that rolled though Sydney (and wider NSW last night). Check out the hashtag of #Sydneystorm on twitter if you get the chance! Some of the best timelapse and real-time lightning footage I have seen in a long time.
Weatherzone reported 73,000 lightning strikes within 100km of Sydney, out of an estimated 1,819,000 lightning strikes over eastern Australia in the 24 hours to 8am today.
Friend in northern Sydney lost power as the storm hit at 830pm last night, and it was still out this morning when she left for work. She is hoping it comes back on at some stage so the food in her fridge and freezer does not thaw completely! (She did the clever "coin on the ice in the ice tray trick" to determine if it did thaw and then re-freeze whilst she was at work!).

I watched that storm live on the youtube Sydney webcam  I reckon last nights storm was one of the best I have seen over the Sydney harbour suburbs, I lived at McMahons Pt for 4 years. Inland Sydney is generally the place for strong storms. I'm visiting Sydney next week, bugger I missed it.

Some mid 20s days lately, and chilly mornings of around 13 degrees 10km closer to the city. Possibly cooler here.

Needing a blanket again. Some warmer days coming up. Viewbank site warmer than the melbourne site due to lack of sea breezes. And someone on the Australia weather forum mentioned all the watering around the site closer to Melbourne cbd might be affecting temperatures(i think it has higher humidity at that site too).

37 degrees before. At least 2 degrees above today's forecasted maximum. This heatwave has nothing on January 2014 and thankfully I don't work a physical job anymore.

Earlier there was a 9 degree difference across 14km. 36 vs 27, same thing happened last week

This short BBC article talks about record rainfall for northern Queensland - must be a lot of rain looking at the records of this region.

It mentions 700mm in a day in the Townsville region, but I have not checked on the BOM website yet.

The small town of Ayr (about 80km south along the coast from Townsville) has been wet for the last few days. These are the figures from the BOM site for the 24 hour periods ending at 9am on the dates shown:

31st January - 27.8mm
1st February - 182.8mm
2nd February - 181.4mm

Total there of 392mm and there has been another 75mm up to 10pm on the 2nd of February.

EDIT, corrected 3rd to 2nd in last sentence.

My Dad is in Cardwell about 100km north of Townsville and has had 700mm in the last 3 days and close to 1,400mm the last 10 days. Here is a pic of his lounge room yesterday morning and they’ve had another 400mm since then. I have contacted him to see if he’s ok with no response yet

A severe thunderstorm has hit Sydney, bringing huge downpours, potentially life-threatening flash-flooding, damaging winds and the risk of hailstones.

The large weather system passed over the Blue Mountains and western Sydney by late morning and hit the city about midday, with people warned to stay indoors.

The intense rainfall brought 77.6 millimetres in just one hour in Horsley Park in western Sydney. Parts of Riverstone, in the city’s north-west, were flooded with knee-high water in some streets.

Early on Monday, one weather gauge west of Newcastle recorded 45 millimetres in 30 minutes.

“People should be mindful of damaging wind gusts, which could be above 90km/h, and the possibility of hail greater than two centimetres,” Bureau of Meteorology’s Helen Reid said.

“I think everyone will be copping a bit of weather today.”

The storm left Sydney’s public transport on its knees. Light rail services on the L2 Randwick and L3 Juniors Kingsford line were closed due to flooding.

Flooding at Strathfield railway station also led to delays across multiple train lines.

Further thunderstorms could hit Sydney into the late afternoon and evening, and the bureau is predicting the chance of less severe thunderstorms on Tuesday before conditions ease on Wednesday.

The bureau warned that Gosford, Sydney, Orange, Katoomba, Dubbo and Parkes were of particular concern.

Early on Monday morning, the storm dumped an extraordinary amount of hail onto Harden, a small town near Cootamundra, leaving it blanketed with a layer of ice. Shops and homes were flooded, windows were smashed and wildlife found injured.

An animal ambulance was deployed from Sydney to treat multiple wild birds left seriously injured from the hail.

The thunderstorms are forming on a surface trough in a moist, unstable air mass in inland NSW, with an upper trough moving them across the state towards the coast.

I got some pea sized hail in Melbourne from a storm coming from the north east, which is a rare direction, but always provides something interesting, just like storms from the north.

Even with the temperatures going up and down, the average Viewbank maximum is sitting at 33 degrees so far this month.

Next week will get it closer to the long term average of around 27 i guess, if you look at my attachment

Hobart has 3 days with 16 degree maximums next week, i would love to move there but it's slightly too cold for me(even the summer average maximums are cooler than Christchurch) and it lacks storms . Those extra sunhine hours compared to NZ locations are nice though
