Interesting clouds today. Lots of Cu build ups this afternoon. Interesting if that was yesterday, then we would of got a jolly good thunderstorm or two.
Some rain overnight with some squally winds around 1am. Rain easing by dawn 9.8mm for today.
It was a sunny but cool day with light southerly with these Cu cloud developments. 18.6C for today.
Regarding fans, I haven't had to use one yet this summer. Had the heater or fire going on one or two occasions but not the fan or air conditioner.
A blue dome day today with light northerly winds. Some high cloud to the west this evening. You could hear the wind up in Talbot Forest this evening but nothing much here down in Raukapuka. 24C for today.
Much stronger NW than I was expecting today, averaging about 45kmh gusting to 70kmh.
Strong enough for small branches to be breaking off.
Surprisingly quite a cool NW wind, I know there has been snow in the mountains but thought that would have melted mostly by now.
Still is warming up on 23C now and should rise more when the sun breaks through.
Brief SW this evening with the chance of a shower.
Nice and warm this morning. Not much wind here but you could here the NW in the trees in Talbot Forest late evening.
Nice fine warm morning here but now the southerly has gone through so back to "Summer" conditions with low cloud and clagg and drizzle rolling in.
A sort of strange thing going on with the temperatures today in christchurch, stations in the east and south of the city have been warmer than those in the west of the city, which is unusual, right now the west is 20-23C, while eastern and southern stations are still as high as 28C, my own station at home, which is in the east peaked at 30.8C today, but has cooled down to 26C
Nice and fine morning here with northerlies peaking the temperature out at 24.8C before the southerly change went through just before 1pm.
Cloud moving in from the SW and south as the afternoon wore and more so claggier looking later on this evening. Hints of drizzle about late evening.
Here we are at the end of the middle month of summer and its becoming yet another cool summer. In the years leading up to 2010, its used to get so hot in the basin most summers, not so much since then. .....Global boiling : John Kerry ...oh ok.
One aspect of this summer that stands out has been the number of days where early morning cloud clears, nice sunny day, then cloud reforms again as the sun gets lower.
A fine day apart from cloudy conditions this morning and this afternoon mainly retreating to the foothills with it fine along the coast. Light southerlies.
22C for today. Fine this evening.

Looks like it will be the coldest January recorded at Christchurch Airport by mean temp since records began, also last May was the coldest May in terms of minimums at the Christchurch Airport. Pretty cool to see 2 records go in the space of 8 months!

That's a common occurrence for as long as I can Remember in South Canterbury. Cloud builds along the Hunter hills and spreads eastward's in the evening with it remaining clear out to towards the coast and North towards Ashburton. The Waimate area is particularly suspectable and often has quite low sunshine hours in the Summer months as a result.
January ended off a much colder then average month for christchurch, with NIWA maps showing 1.2c - 2c below average anomalies for january, it ended off a much wetter then usual month too, with >130mm of rain compared to an average of 40-45mm of rain as well.
We only had 3 warmer then average days in the entire month too, al of which in the last 10 days of the month (based on average daily maximum)
Stats for January.
minimum 7.2C Tuesday the 28th
maximum 25C Wednesday the 22nd
Highest minimum 15,5C Wednesday the 29th
Lowest maximum 14.6C Saturday the 11th
Rainfall total 105.2mm over 14 days
Days of clagg many.
Note: Rainfall totals in other parts of South Canterbury, courtesy of MS.
Levels 72.7mm
Fairlie 124.5mm
Twizel 50.8mm
NZ's national average temp of 16.4°C was 0.8°C below normal, making it our coldest January since 2017.
Of the six main centres, Auckland was the warmest, Hamilton the driest, Tauranga the sunniest, Dunedin the coolest, and Christchurch the wettest and least sunny.

Wellington must have been the most "southerly-est". The wind rose for the month would be very interesting to see vs long term!
A string of strong southerlies late December and early Jan has left the large sycamore outside our property with salt burn that has meant half the leaves have fallen off, and many more looking very brown. Normally it would be lush through to mid-March.
It was the worst January for "summer" weather that I can remember in Christchurch city. We have had some great summers in the last 10-15 years so I can tolerate an average one now and again.
Least we don't have huge wildfire issues to contend with for the next few months.
