That reminds me why would lightning strikes be present if a volcano blew over Auckland? :? I remember that documentry series are you ready about auckland volcanoes mentioning about this any suggestions why this would be?.
Just kinda on this topic.

I suppose if there was one place within a hurricane where you would expect lightning to be, it would be in the eye wall were the horizontal winds are reducing. Thanks for the link. :)

Jason, during the 1995/96 Ruapehu eruptions there were a few nights with magical electric discharges.. a dry electrical storm 'precipitating' ash.

The 1886 10 June eruption of Tarawera also on that spooky night it also sent out magical amounts of lightning (Check out http://www.anheizen.com/)

Lightning is easier to discharge in eruption plumes since the updrafts are MUCH MUCH hotter!! Maybe? NZstorm?
