Chance of thunderstorms tommorrow with the southerly forecast.
No sign of thunderstorm or any other precipitation in the Chch/Banks Peninsula area today. Instead we've got a dry (so far), but fresh southerly, that came through early in the morning. Cloudy with high cloud both before and after the change. Certainly alot cooler than yesterday, though.
TV3 weather had Ashburton at 15 degrees today, the lowest in the country,
what a joke!,mustve been a mistake somewhere along the line, still 21 degrees now.
TV1 Weather made the same mistake for that day. I was a bit puzzled at first, thinking what kind of situation what bring a 21C max to Chch, yet only a 15C max for Ashburton on the same day. I soon realised it must've been a mistake, knowing that we were in a spell of fine weather in Canterbury, a scenario in which inland areas are invariably warmer than the coast, except in winter.

Definately no potetential for thunderstorm activity today, that's why I never issued a thunder-watch. It would of been nice to see some lightning activity especially after seeing the documentary last night on the storm-chasers ! :)
The southerly was much weaker than the "Southerly Buster" as what was predicted in this morning's PRESS.
I don't even think it went southerly here, if so veryweak and un-noticable. By early afternoon back to a breezy northerly here and has been ever since. Rather cloudy and a bit hazy although a bit more easterlish now

The Ashburton Guardian newspaper reported today that Metservice advised they were incorrect on the temperature recorded here on Sunday,Metservice received a number of calls from Ashburton residents.
Official maximum for the day was 22.3.

Boring southerly change today with no rain,so much for the old fashioned southerly buster that was forecast yesterday.
Currently overcast and cool,temp 13.

Cheers.

Todays cool change was in the lower atmosphere only(under 2500m) which tends to make the air more stable rarther than unstable. The freezing level at Invercargill today though is 1100m so it should be feeling a bit cold down there today. But a dramatic turn around in temps on the way with a warm N'Wester by weeks end.

Another excellent weather doco last night with some superb tornado video.
The tornadoes are extremely localised but it is interesting to bear in mind they actually draw their energy from a vast geographic area, from moisture from the Gulf of Mexico and high level jet streams that come in from the Pacific Ocean. There is no other place on the planet like the central USA for tornadic storms. Just the right geographic setup there for their formation.

Yeah not much of a day today after yesterdays sunny warmish weather.

December is a month of change though for Aucklands weather. We go from spring to summer fairly quickly. Early December is typical cool southwesterly but by the end of the month it will be very warm and muggy. ;)
