Sweet
We have (as I peer through the darkness) a snow line around 500m. But a according to the forecast it should be on the beach soon

There is no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothes.

Interesting tid-bit on Jeff's weather site:
On this day:
In 1996
Many roads were closed as heavy snow set-in over Canterbury and the Kaikoura Coast, with falls reaching sea level. Heaviest falls occurred inland where about 40 cm fell in some places.
Locals said it was the first time in 100 years that snow had settled on the beach at Kaikoura! Both Dunedin and Christchurch Airports closed, along with several schools.

Neat!
Any more thoughts as to how much will settle here in Canterbury, especially here in CHCH?
Snow went to rain/sleet for a while but now back to snow again...with power flickers now and then...upsetting my broadband modem...grrrrr.....

Beware! Lots of exaggeration going on, as usual. A guy told me he had three feet of snow on his lawn. I went passed his house a short while later on my way elsewhere and he has at most 15-30 cm. Everybody I've spoken to has grossly overestimated the amount of snow, including a local who provided a report for a radio station.Jasestrm wrote:Turned to a ligher snow outside but reports of very heavy snow now falling in south canterbury.
Went out to the street looks like someone nearly went into the footpath skidmarks evident.
Cheers
Jason.
There's snow alright, but nothing like the quantities being reported. Maybe there's a lot more in other places (although I'm told none at all fell on Queenstown, much to their disgust), but it's likely there's a great deal of misleading reporting going on from all over.
Now I'm off to frolic in the foot or so we got with my baby daughter!

About 5cm here, but its 5cm of really wet sticky stuff, so not only do we have 5cm on the ground, we have 5cm on all the trees, power lines, fence tops etc, plus 5 cm on the vertical sides of buildings, cars, trees, power poles! Quite a bit of damage to trees and bushes from the weight of the snow. Our shadehouse (1 acre) has collapsed under the weight, and the roof of our plastic tunnel house is looking dodgy.

It's laughable - yesterday afternoon they were forecasting sleet/strong SW - overnight it was nearly calm, slight N, moonlight and between 1 and 2 degrees. Very sunny now though still cold. So not a flake has fallen hereGary Roberts wrote:Did you guys down there get any snow, and if so how much?Flutterbye wrote:Rather ironic

Lovely dry powdery stuff here, although plenty on lines and things because we got so much. The old S/W antenna wire stretched between the neighbour's place and my house came down...I'd forgotten it was even there! And we only just got AC main power back about 20 minutes ago.TonyT wrote:About 5cm here, but its 5cm of really wet sticky stuff, so not only do we have 5cm on the ground, we have 5cm on all the trees, power lines, fence tops etc, plus 5 cm on the vertical sides of buildings, cars, trees, power poles! A guy I spoke to this morning in Queenstown is pouring concrete right now, so I guess it goes to show that Invercargill wasn't the only place to have missed out!Flutterbye wrote:It's laughable - yesterday afternoon they were forecasting sleet/strong SW - overnight it was nearly calm, slight N, moonlight and between 1 and 2 degrees.
