Seems to be warranting it's own thread already....

Winds wreak havoc across N Island

The power is coming back on in Rotorua while investigations continue into the the substation fault which blacked out the city, including the CBD.

An explosion was heard at the substation just before one o'clock.

Lines company Unison Networks say they have now managed to restore to supply to all affected areas, but spokesman Bill Hewitt says they are also having to cut power to Rainbow Mountain and Reporoa to fix a fault on the 33,000 volt line

Other parts of the Western Bay of Plenty - battered by gale force winds - have also been hit by power cuts.

Rural townships near Te Puke including Pukehina and Pongakawa are affected , along with areas further north in Katikati.

Meanwhile, two boats have gone adrift in the high winds.

A 35 foot launch slipped its moorings and ran aground at Pilot Bay at Mount Maunganui, and a yacht is reported adrift at Omokoroa.

Meanwhile extreme winds in Taranaki have left one unlucky local with a wreck of a car.

Gusts of up to 100 kilometres an hour have brought down a large part of a pohutukawa tree, and crushed a car parked beneath it.

The vehicle is a write off.
