Weather interest at a new high in Canterbury
In my 20 years of broadcasting,I have never experienced the amount of interest from the public at large, in regards to the weather
Phonecalls, emails, texts, pics of the snow etc have been inundating the station for about 7-10 days now.
A number have been from those in outlying rural areas still without power and seeking more information
Tony, your wealth of knowledge regarding the weather is a godsend and it was great to have a chat today and keep informed with your posts on here too.I believe it is important to advise the public of any potential severe weather and your guidance has been excellent
...and if the developments hold true for later in the week, I'm sure the interest from the public at large will continue higher yet!

Blink and you'd have missed it though, took 40 mins out of my day for that!
The trouble with TVNZ is they never like to say anything that doesnt come from MetService, so even though the local reporters were keen to do the interview, I was never really expecting the news bosses in Auckland to screen much of it. TV3 seem much more open editorially (eh Joe?!)

Yes Tony for sure we are much more relaxed at giving "other than mainstream" a go on air! TVNZ Bah Humbug! <grin> I''l be out again this week sniffing around the South Island looking for weather angles.

If you make it down to Twizel and/or Omarama, call in for a cuppa (and a power station tour if you're up for one).joecam wrote:I was never really expecting the news bosses in Auckland to screen much of it. TV3 seem much more open editorially (eh Joe?!)

A friend of mine did that. Sounded greattgsnoopy wrote:Gary any possibility you could organise a tour of Manapouri? That one would be worth a specific trip I suspect.
There is no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothes.

Real Journeys run a regular tour, at least once per day, and possibly other operators also (I'll check). They take a bus down through the portal gates and into the tunnel, which is very impressive, especially the first time. From there you head onto the viewing platform above the machine floor. I'm guessing that's the one Phil's mate did too.tgsnoopy wrote:Gary any possibility you could organise a tour of Manapouri? That one would be worth a specific trip I suspect.
There's a fair bit more to the station of course, but it's all very subterranean (and often wet...), rather more akin to spelunking than anything. I only work down at Manapouri a few times per year on average, but I'll let you know next time I'm going to be there if possible, and maybe get a more thorough tour jacked up.
