Christchurch 5.7C (7.1C)
I did my winter summary yesterday and came up with a mean 6.1C for 2006 and 7.5C for 2005, a little warmer then the airport, +0.4C for both years.

My summary for winters from 2003 to 2006 is at

if you want to have a look.

That is this years. I put 2005 in also for a comprison.

Those readings are from the airports which tend to be a bit colder in winter than the city areas. Didn't have any figures for Dunedin.

For the record, I recorded 333.8mm of rainfall for winter here in Somerfield. Total so far for year stands at 723.5mm.
I recorded 170.9mm in August, West Melton readings not in yet but a bit less. Apparently TonyT only recorded 30mm at Amberley Beach, according to last Friday's PRESS which I never saw. Bob Crowder questioned that reading, when he rang me on Sat morning.

News item re NIWA's winter report [preliminary - still waiting for their website to post the August summary and then the winter summary].

A few things to note: winter mean temp. only 0.2C below normal - though the coolest since 1997. From a temp. series I can see that every winter in 1929-1941 (inclusive) was colder - even in the 60s 5 of the 10 were colder.

Auckland sunniest "main" centre - must have been all that 8/8 weather ;) :D :?

Despite its high rainfall Wellington had its 3rd sunniest winter in a century of records.

Correct John, we had 27mm for August, 42mm for July, 106mm for June, to make a winter total of 175mm, or about half of what you got. The contrast from Amberly to Chch is quite amazing - the last 10 days of NWers here have dried out the surface and we are quite dusty, even had to water some new plants in the garden. Grass growth has been phenomenal for the time of year. Once you get to Kaiapoi you start to see water lying in paddocks, and of course around Chch and out towards Leeston the ground is solidly waterlogged.

I see from some 1961-1990 normals that an Amberley site (Railway Terrace) is quoted with an annual mean of about 660mm, pretty close to that of Christchurch city sites - so is the winter difference this year just "one of those things"?

Correct. Mean annual for Amberley is almost identical to Chch, but on slightly fewer days (from memory about 5 fewer). The heavy rain event in early August only brought about 10mm out here and in most of Canty, but around the Peninsula and in Chch city there were totals of 120mm+. Most of Canty is not nearly as wet underfoot as Chch, in fact most of Canty is starting to get rather dry underfoot.

Of the main centres, Wellington was the wettest, Dunedin easily the driest and Auckland the sunniest.

Dargaville, Hamilton, New Plymouth, Dunedin and Invercargill had their sunniest winters ever.
So sunny in the west with a departing weak La Nina. 8)

Since it was sunny in the east as well and I dont think anyone believes we had a weak La Nina over winter, you're probably a bit off the mark there Foggy... :?

Maybe not La Nina over the central eastern Pacific during the SH winter, but the presences are still here for sure. I personally think it takes weeks, if not months until we feel the effects in NZ of ENSO events or fluctuations.

Note these are the sunniest winters ever on all NIWA records.

And that's excluding near-misses like Wellington (3rd sunniest in a century of records).

2005 was an excessively mild winter which is perhaps one reason why this winter felt so cold. :)

June this year was very cold (coldest since 1972 nationally), balanced by very slightly above normal temps in July and August.
