"Everyone knows it's windy...."

Holy "batten down the hatches," Batman!!

From the M/S:
STRONG WIND WARNING
EXPOSED PARTS OF CANTERBURY OTAGO AND SOUTHLAND Northwest gales are expected to develop on Wednesday afternoon and reach severe gale late in the day.

Northwest wind gusts of 140km/h are expected for about 8 hours starting at 4pm Wednesday in Southland, 6pm Wednesday in Otago and 8pm in Canterbury.

If my math is right, 140 km/h is about 85 mph or so…that WILL knock you over, I reckon…(so just don’t go outside! :-P )

Strongest gusts should affect exposed areas like the Raikaia and Waimakiriri Gorges rather than Chch, but we could still get gales here.

Yes a typical Nor west windstorm on Thursday Morning I would be going for followed by a breif dolop of rain from the west then fine in the afternoon.
I would say with wind gusts that high inland chch and other more eastern areas could be looking at a 90-100kmh wind gusts for a short time and perhaps 110kmh in some more south canty eastern regions that are exposed.
Inland will see the strongest though.
The wekend poses another good blow too not to mention two eyes open for Monday 8) .
Looks like could get few spits soon sky looking abit NW ruggedy  .
Cheers
Jason.

Gale norwesters haven't hit Chch (yet); in fact the wind is quite light now - the fresh northeasterly that cooled the city today has died down.

Northwesterly arrived overnight; became strong, but not gale here. Bit of rain in central Chch as ground was damp at dawn, but dried out pretty quickly as it's now almost 20C. Could be a very summery day, if the northeasterly doesn't pick up. (northwesterly/westerly is just fresh now)

Weather has become nice and fine here, with a few puffy small T/Cu and a mod westerly. Nice on your birthday. :)

Happy Birthday, Foggy.
Make sure that "mod westerly" doesn't blow those candles out...
