Yes Tony but wouldn't it gather too much rain at the top ;) .
It is all level and firmly in the post so should be picking ok readings considering it only picked out 4mm for September.
Pool is not big enough  yes I know you live close to the ocean  :D .
Cheers
Jason.

Wasn't too bad of a day in Auckland in the end. The real showers didn't turn up untill about 4pm. Looking at the IR satellite, clouds don't look much around the top of the country. NZWP sounding has tropopause at 6200m (-32), not overly high.
One of the conditions we have decided upon for severe thunderstorms in NZ (and many other places) is 25+mm/hr.
Interestingly in USA, they leave rainfall out of thunderstorm warnings and issue 'flash flood' instead.

jason, you could end up with rain splashing off the post into the rain gauge....i think thats a problem (for rain from that direction....but maybe you dont get rain from that diretion much)
on the otherside of the coin, the post will shelter the rain gauge for rain from that angle (wind blown rain anyway)

It would gather just the right amount of rain if it were at the top. I think Brian is right, you're not going to get optimum performance out of it mounted the way it is now.

Wow, thats an amazing raingauge. I've never seen one that big before. I like the way you've used a wooden frame to support it. How do you empty it? Do you use the ladder to climb in and use a ruler to measure the accumulated rainfall? I know you have big downpours at your place but I never imagined you'd need such as big gauge. :D

PS Your new swimming pool looks rather small though... :D

PPS Seriously, your raingauge will not be reading correctly mounted the way it is. You need to get the top of the gauge up above the top of the post.
I think he missed that one, Tony!

How about this... There's NO WAY I would be able to swim in MY rain gauge! :D :D :D
